Macbook problem

Hi guys, I installed an SSD a while ago and kept the original hard drive by removing the optical drive and using that space for it. All of a sudden the original drive no longer shows up, first thing I thought was dead hard drive but it got picked up when I switched the drives around and entering disk utility so something else is obviously wrong. What's the best way to go about figuring out what it could be? If not the cable what else?

Well seems a common fault is the sata cable failing so have bought one in the hope it sorts it out. Not cheap.
