I've just ordered mine - says it'll be dispached on Tue 21st - what do you think my chances are for getting it by Fri?

Finally got mine today and I'm typing this on it now! OS X runs pretty damn fast. I haven't tried any other OS yet. I'll report back when I've done some testing with linux and windows.

How long did it take from ordering to receipt?

The website says midnight Mon 18th is the last order date for pre-Christmas delivery. I ordered mine over the phone on the afternoon of Sat 16th and the website says estimated dispatch on Thu 21st and delivery on 3rd-4th Jan.

The question is will it arrive on Fri 22nd? If not what about all the orders on 18th expecting pre-Christmas delivery?

Give the store a ring. If it's CTO is will come from Shanghai which takes a few days.
CTO? It's a regular MacBook with RAM upgrade to 2GB. They also wanted to send me a printer (I don't really want but might be able to sell) with rebate.

I assume he meant Built to Order. In your case, the RAM upgrade could – and it would appear it does, according to the delivery schedule estimates you have been given – warrant shipping from the factory if Apple do not have a stockpile of Macbooks with 2GB RAM upgrades somewhere along the line.

If you check the Apple Store website (I'd link, but their session-based URLs are a constant source of aggravation), they have a whole page dedicated to dates for Christmas delivery. They clearly state that the 18th December is for standard mac models and 'popular' configurations of said macs – i.e. pre-built stockpiles they have sitting in warehouses here in the UK. On the same page, they state that non-standard configurations must be ordered by 8th December.

It would appear that your order falls under the category of non-standard configurations, and therefore you have missed the Christmas delivery deadline. Your MacBook is going to be shipped from the factory in Shanghai, which in my experience should take about a week from the dispatch date. It may arrive before the estimated delivery date (see the tracking details you are given once it has been dispatched), but it won't arrive for Christmas, I'm afraid.

Yeah - that's what I thought however there are "Popular Custom Configurations" of which a regular 2.0GHz with just the 2GB upgrade is one... they have the same last order date the standard models. Before Christmas isn't that important. I guess I'll jsut have to wait and see! :)

Indeed, and mine is a "Popular Custom Configuration Mac Models" so ordering on the 16th should mean delivery before Christmas... I'm not convinced though!

It usually is next day.. or at latest 3 days :)

I would be confident.. they are pretty good if they say 24hrs

What do you mean?

He has already been told that his order is due to be dispatched on the 21st for an estimated delivery date of 3-4th January. In my experience the estimates Apple provide are usually quite accurate – albeit with a bit of insurance tacked onto the estimated delivery date to avoid broken promises and nasty phone calls. These dates are consistent with a BTO order being shipped from the factory in Shanghai, which is not going to be next day by any stretch of the imagination!

Whilst clv101's MacBook may be considered a 'popular custom configuration', in practice that is just a guise for models which Apple keep stockpiles of, and considering the time of year I wouldn't be at all surprised if they have run out of that particular configuration. Unfortunately – atleast in my experience – the estimated dispatch date is usually bang on, and in this case the dispatch date suggests a BTO order.

Perhaps a few days before the estimated delivery date, but I wouldn't get my hopes up for delivery before Christmas

Mine took 14 days from order to delivery. I doubt you'll get yours by Christmas. I reckon if you order a standard model, without any customisation you'll get it by Christmas if you order by the 18th. If it is a custom model it will take longer.

It was dispached on 20th... but there isn't any tracking info yet so I don't actually know where it's coming from.

They're shipped from Ireland. Ours got here before the tracking number was trackable :D

Oh, that's interesting. Thanks for the info.

EDIT: I now have the tracking info - it's on a plane from Shanghai today with an ETA of 29th Dec. Ah well.

Do they email to let you know whom it is coming with? I ordered an iMac for work and have a tracking number, but they don't tell me who the courier is!
