Machine dead :(

Hi guys,

Just sitting around browsing the web when suddenly the PC locks up - everything is frozen.

So I hit the reset button.

Graphics card and CPU fan spin up to max speed and the machine doesn't post. Gets as far as code 90 on the BIOS.

And thats it - all I can get out of it. Clearing the CMOS doesnt help.

It's an Abit IP35 Pro, Q6600, GTX285, etc.

Any ideas? It's usually a completely flawless machine that goes weeks and weeks without a reboot :(

Thanks guys :(

Removed CMOS battery for 5 minutes. Put it back in.

Got into BIOS - setup the correct date/time, hit save and exit and it failed to POST again this time code 05.

Restarted. Again, no POST. Code 01.

Next question - I have a RAID-0 stripe set up on this machine. Is there anything I should know about making sure I don't break the stripe and loose all my data?

Going to have to give up until January 1st as I'm away first thing tommorrow morning, what a completley annoying time for this to happen! Just want to make sure I can preserve that RAID Array.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Turned it on this morning, POST'd to the Abit splash screen but nothing else. Going to have to give up until January 1st :(

I'll revisit this a few days later :p

Hi guys,

I'm back and trying to fix this. I've narrowed it down to my GTX280 - the machine POST's without issue using an old Radeon X850XT.

Problem is I cannot now boot into Windows. I get a BSOD complaining of REGISTRY_ERROR. I can't get in via Safemode either - it either hangs, or simply reboots, or gives me a BSOD.

Bit stuck now!

It's Windows 7.

I'm pretty sure again it now isnt the graphics card, as oddly it POST's fine with the GTX280 back in

But I cant get it into safe mode, or anything.

Trying a fresh Windows install onto another disk and I've got the 'Starting Windows' part of the installer... it seems to have frozen up..

This is truely driving me up the wall.

New board in now - another IP35 Pro.

Won't even POST at all. Random codes, sometimes C5, sometimes 01.

:(

I cannot remember ever having this sort of trouble with any machine I've ever built before :(

Now trying known good RAM.

It's so random, it never does the same thing twice, it was POSTing but now it's stopped doing that again. Sigh. The error code is usually different each time as well.

So it POST'd. Into BIOS, set USB keyboard support to BIOS. The only change I made.

Restarted. POST'd again, no problem. Got as far as booting but no boot device found - thats fine, I'd forgotton to put CD-ROM in the boot order. Hit reset simply to do this and it's hung on the splash screen - error code 52.

I had made ZERO changes to anything between the succesful POST and the unsuccesful POST.

Troubleshooting random behaviour is almost impossible :(

I wish I could even get as far as the Windows reinstall on the new board :(

If I clear the CMOS it will almost always POST - but as soon as I make changes in the BIOS and reboot thats that, it messes about and fails to get past the splash screen.

So I can't get as far as installing Windows because I can't set the correct boot order.

I have never encountered anything as frustrating as this before.

So far I have tried:

a) A new board
b) A new HDD
c) New memory
d) New graphics card

PSU testing is going to be tricky but I cannot understand how a PSU would be sensitive to simple changes in the BIOS :(

I have set the machine up outside of the case now and I've finally got into Windows installer and it seems to be progressing though I'm sure it's taking a lot longer than usual..

I'm beginning to lose hope again, as it's been sat on 'Setup is Starting' for ages.

Edit: It's actually just carried on again after literally 4-5 minutes of sitting there..

Windows is now installing..

It's definately ridiculously slow though, which seems odd.

And thats the end of that, Windows installer crashed out with a BSOD saying

'BAD_POOL_CALLER'

STOP: 0x000000C2 (0x00000007, 0x00001097, 0x8BB4BC40, 0x81303030)

I can't just rush to the cupboard and pull out another high end PSU to test :p

Is there a way of testing the PSU? The voltages seem ok..

I've no idea what I did, I dont think I did anything, but I am back in my original windows installation now and it POST's every time.

But it's not stable, I get about 30 minutes before it just randomly reboots :(

Decided to add all the memory (Had only one slot).

4 sticks: no POST
2 sticks: BSOD booting windows - PFN_LIST_CURRUPT
2 sticks: Anotehr BSOD booting windows - PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA
1 stick: Booted back into Windows.

Every hour something else changes my school of thought. Now I'm back to thinking it's the memory at fault

Hello everyone and welcome to day 2 of me wasting what little time is left of this holiday period.

Voltage page in the BIOS all looks normal. No fluctuations.

I can now boot into windows with only one stick of RAM, and as per last night it's stable for a while then BSOD's.

I noticed that my CPU fan was running at full speed so I popped into the BIOS to turn CPU fan control to on - it was set to off. And... the machine wont POST with this setting enabled.

This is why this problem is driving me insane. Nothing seems related. Why would turning the CPU fan speed control on prevent the machine booting?!

Clear CMOS, leave it off, and we are booting again.

I was loathe to do this but I'm now going to dismantle another machine I have with the same Corsair PSU to try and rule the PSU out.

I will literally cry if I end up with two broken machines :D

PSU and memory swapped out.

My memory and PSU are not in my other known good machine, and the known good memory and PSU are in my machine.

The problwms remain.

Swapped back to previous motherboard and it wont even POST again.

Starting to consider the possibility that my motherboard is broken, and the reason I had a spare IP35 kicking around is because that was broken as well...

If its that, what are the chances of being able to get a working IP35 Pro these days or am I best to just upgrade?
