Machine freezing on downloads

Hi all,

Whenever I try to update my AMD Graphics card drivers, the machine just freezes and colours on my screen turn in a load of horizontal lines so I have to hard reboot every time.

Also whenever I download anything from steam or anything largish on Chrome, my machine locks up for 8-9 seconds at a time, then it's ok for 2 seconds, then freezes again until the download is finished.

I have reformatted my SSD incase I had downloaded anything dodgy, and purchased a new graphics card (Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 7970 Windforce 3X 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card) incase the old one had died. Exactly the same issue.

My games haven't been running too smoothly either, slightly lagging, but isn't show this as an FPS Issue.

I have a crucial 512 SSD which I'm thinking about replacing? I have tried taking the RAM out stick by stick but still cannot find out what the issue is.

Can anyone suggest what I should try next? I'm using Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium.

Cheers for your help.

I'd reset the BIOS to rule out any weird RAM timings or dodgy overclock first. Then make sure the motherboard chipset drivers were up to date

can check the m4's firmware

common 5400 hour use freezing bug which is fixed by flashing to latest firmware

to check download/look in ssdlife

Yeh I looked into that, updated the firmware and didn't seem to do much.

I mean with the download - maybe it is a faulty SSD? Freezing when writing to the HD - but would this cause issues with the gfx card driver? Or general laggyness?

you have onboard graphics? if so use those and download,if no freezing you know its gpu related

random coloured screens with lines across point to graphic card and or gpu memory

I'd be inclined to agree wazza but he's changed the GPU already and gets the same issue. What CPU and motherboard are you running? Also, what are the system and CPU temps like in the BIOS after crashing?
