Hey All,

Was wondering if you could help spec a machine for me...

For general use and HighDef output and playback, so needs to include BluRay player and HDMI output - pref with a decent soundcard also.

Will not be used for Gaming at all - but not quite a dedicated HTPC either, general use - heavy high def video use and lots of hard drive space.

Spec to be around £300-400 - no need for case/monitor/peripherals - just the core parts

Mobo
CPU
Ram
HDD
GFX Card

Cheers :)

How about something along these lines

Intel Core 2 Duo E5200 2.5GHz / Asrock 4CoreDual-SATA2 Rev2 / Kingston HyperX 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 (2x1GB) Bundle £142.57

Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (WD10EADS) £80.99

Pioneer BDC-S02BK 5x BluRay-ROM/12x DVD±RW Serial ATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM £69.99

Asus ATI Radeon HD 4670 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail (90-C1CLP0-J0UAN00Z) £60.94

Corsair VX 450W ATX Power Supply (CMPSU-450VXUK) £57.98

Shipping : £10.50
Total : £424.55

I included a PSU as I wasn't sure if you had one or not.

I just picked a bundle as it was easier, I personally wouldn't get anything other than a Gigabyte board but in such a low cost build most of these boards are much of a muchness really.

Maybe if you're overclocking with them, for someone just using the machine for 'general use' you'd probably never even tell the difference without sitting there being anal over synthetic benchmarks.

Well apart from the fact the pci express slot is only 4X, it has an AGP slot which will never get used, it only supports memory up to 667mhz and only has 2 ddr2 slots, it's based on the woefull VIA chipset, you've only got 2 sata connectors and yes it's shockingly bad at overclocking then i guess it's a wonderfull board

Apart from maybe the SATA connectors, none of the rest of those issues really make any difference to a machine thats just getting general use.

Actually, thinking about it more, for something that is just general use, i'd be tempted to go the AMD route anyway and get something like this

The cpu will be fine yes, much of the video processing will be offloaded to the video card anyway.

With that mainboard you've also got the opportunity to overclock that cpu, and 3Ghz would easily be obtained even just using the stock heatsink.
