i came across this piece of software for my mac last night and was wondering if it is really worth the money?

Do Macs need de-fraging etc? I've already got prey installed too but mackeeper has a similar programme bundled in.

If anyone has any more info on this it would be appreciated

They don't really need de-fragged, no. However if you want something to clean up space, I would recommend Piriform's mac version of Ccleaner (that we all know and love from Windows) or CleanMyMac from MacPaw. Ccleaner is of course free, CleanMyMac costs £25 for an unlimited license.

I myself use CleanMyMac, but only because at the time I bought it Ccleaner for Mac wasn't available.

You can also try repairing disk permissions: http://kb.iu.edu/data/aoxn.html to help speed things up. I do it, but very rarely as I've never noticed an incredible difference in response when I've done it.

As for MacKeeper, I've not used it. I don't intend to ever use it though because of the way they spam their product out all over the internet.

Edit: Also found this regarding disk optimisation.

I have a maintenance schedule that I follow on a regular basis which keeps my Mac running as well as the day I bought it. I thoroughly recommend that other Mac owners follow the same schedule, here it is:

(see what I did there?) :)

I've had to run Onyx a couple of times when the Spotlight cache got a bit screwed but apart from that, nothing has happened which has caused me to need to run any kind of maintenance tools.

The OS has three built in maintenance scripts which run daily, weekly and monthly and the file system doesn't suffer from fragmentation.

If I remove an app, I run AppCleaner to do it which takes out associated files but there's no registry to clean.

On the handful of Macs I've now owned (Mac Pro, Mac Mini and two iMacs) over the last what, four years? I've noticed no degradation in performance from when they were first installed. That's why I believe it doesn't require anything.

Let me turn that around, magicroundabout, why do you believe the OS requires regular maintenance?

i've no idea. i've only owned my mac for the last 3 months so am new to OSx.

i've still got windows in my mind and the countless times that needs defraging etc.

i've run onyx and have seen the maintenance scripts which OSx runs and it also told me to sort out the startup disc which i've done (press cmd + R on startup, disc utility etc).

i've also disabled all the widgets to speed things up. thats made a big difference too

I use AppZapper to clean up any apps I want to remove.

As for maintenance, I just OS X do it's own scripts (as Feek mentioned; daily, weekly and monthly) and have NEVER suffered any performance degradation over a multitude of years.

The only time I've noticed mine go slow is if you have a slower 5400rpm HDD and a lot of service processes running that are concurrently accessing the HDD. I picked this up when testing out ML on a clean partition and it ran far smoother without any additional software installed - however the reason it was so obvious was because of a buggy firmware on my Seagate hybrid drive that caused micro-stuttering.
