MacPro/Studio Use.

Same with 12GB ram, you won't use it. Get a quad, 8GB ram.

8 Core and 12GB RAM isn't overkill and he could use it. Better to have over specified the machine rather than the other way round and hit problems. RAM isn't too expensive and although the jump from 4 Core to 8 Core has a price hit it will probably give a better ROI.

Remember this computer is for serious use not just for e-Penis points. ;)

You are, of course, right that the OP should get plenty of storage both fast online and good secondary (Drobo?) and proper peripherals!

Protools 8 allows 48 Tracks+ Music production tool kit i believe can push it to 100+, im not going to be using a 002, 002 pres are awful, but the 003 pre's arent that bad, im currently hooked up to an old school 01v, but im going to be investing in a desk when alls up and running.

No, you're right, PT8LE is 48 stereo tracks, music production tool kits takes it to 64 tracks (from what i've been told, i'm still rocking PT6 lol). And the 01v's are good desks, especially with them being cheap for an all digital desk although neither the 01v or 02v offer any decent pres, likewise the 003 pres are still a little harsh sounding although miles ahead of what they chucked on the 002s ;)

I know this isn't penis waving, i wouldn't be replying if i thought it was, but i still don't think the op needs to lash out on a top end spec mac when the money could be put towards music gear (or better spec music gear) that would have a more of an impact on their work and final produced products than a mac that spends most of it's life doing nothing.

Eitherway, have a look over on GearSlutz or Digidesign forums, i'm sure you'll get a better answer there :)

Always over-spec....it's amazing how studio-level tools will eat whatever power you have.

My gf visited the other week and used my PC for some after effects work...being a Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz w/4Gb and a couple of hard disks I thought it'd be fine - how wrong I was...could've done with 8Gb RAM at least!
