Whats the advantage of having a monitor connect to a Mac via thunderbolt?

If its a new thunderbolt display they have extra ports on the back, I think FireWire and Ethernet as well as USB.

Also having a thunderbolt port on the mac means you can daisy chain other tb devices like another display or hdds.

Also if you want to use the extra ports on the back of the new tb display it has to be connected through FireWire. If not it will still work as a display I believe but the ports on the back will be useless.
