I'm looking for opinions on what Macro lense to get for my 350D. Currently I’m looking at

Canon 100mm F2.8 costing about £380
Tamron 90mm F2.8 costing about £280

Both are meant to have good image qualities.

Ideally I would prefer the Canon but it more expensive. On the plus side it more or less guaranteed to work on future Canon cameras, unlike 3rd party lenses. Which means a high resale value if I decided to sell. A third option I’ve ignored is the sigma 105mm F2.8 due to Sigma past track record on compatibility of lenses.

What are your views on the lenses and are there any more suggestions?

I've got the Canon and it's a wonderful lens. I decided against the Sigma for exactly the same reasons as you, and decided against the Tamron because it feels like a cheap, nasty bit of kit. Certainly doesn't feel or look like it's worth £280!

Admittedly looks and feel alone does not a lens make, but it was my money and I went for the Canon. And by crikey does it produce some cracking results:

That is a gorgeous image. You get what you pay for in this world :)

Given the choice between those two I would go for the Canon. As it was, I went for the Sigma option and havnt looked back since - an absolutely fantastic lens.

Not far off an optical match for the Canon but a hell of a lot slower to focus (not really an issue if you are ONLY using it for macro work).

Some of the shots I have seen from both lenses have been absolutely breathtaking :)

EDIT: Dod, your link 404s...

canon 35-80mm mk3 is my choice.....

plenty more examples too ;)

If you get the Canon 100mm from the USA (www.bhphoto.com, since its not a competitor), you can get it for much closer to £300 even after adding postage by courier. Add import fees though, I buy from Gibraltar because we dont pay duty on some types of item like art related, and photographic material falls under that.

Decided to get the Canon 100mm F2.8 and import it to save money. The lense was only about £270 but after shipping and customs finding out it cost me £367. The saving of £25 is hardly worth the hassle of purchasing it abroad.

I got the Canon 100mm Macro lens from Hong-Kong, including import charges it cost me £310, so importing is worth it if you do your research :)

I've just ordered the Canon one myself, so looking foward to getting it as I've deliberated for a long time. I nearly went the Sigma route but in the end I thought I'm only going to buy one so get the best I can afford and the faster focus speed swung it for me in the end. Going the cannon route just meant I had to wait a little longer. ;)

You did well SDK, I was chuffed at getting mine for £316, I bet I could find loads under £310 now I've ordered. :D
