Looking at an M4 mini as a light use desktop but want to pair it with my normal 4k 144 display.

I vaguely remember having issues previously with osx and non apple displays is this still a thing or something from the past ?

Upgraded from m1 macbook air on LG TV had constant issues with dpi and hdr and it not waking etc. M4 mini has worked rock solid with any res and refresh currrently on 120hz , no hdr issues no disconnects. Wakes TV and shuts it down from sleep no bother. Think M4 mini finally sorts most of the issues with hdmi.

The only negative is that 5k displays look better, especially when it comes to text. But this does not mean 4k displays are bad, because they aren't. I happily used one for years with my MacBook. If I hadn't been spoiled by the Studio Display I'd still be perfectly happy with a 4k. For many, the increased cost for a 5k display just isn't worth the returns.

The problem with the studio display is that I still have my NAS, Windows and Linux machines to contend with, and having such a display would leave me woefully underequppied. I'm tempted by Dell's 5k monitor offering, but am also looking at the G9 (but am second guessing that due to the software samsung insists on putting in) or just getting a decent 4K screen. I have to act quickly though, as my current screen now has a number of dead pixels.

No 5k option, the 27" 4k is nearly as expensive as the Studio Display when on offer and with cash back etc. Not entirely sure why you'd not get the ASD?

Is the BetterDisplay app still a thing? I know a bunch of the guys at work would use that for their external monitors with Macbook Pros.
This is the way. BetterDisplay set to 'smooth scaling', 'add near-native hiDPI resolution', and resolution at 2880x1620 (150% interface scale) looks great on my UHD QD-OLED monitor.

BetterDisplay is well worth the price IMHO.

Tried the wife’s m4 pro on my 4k display and it certainly isn’t as sharp as my w11 system

49 inch 4k ftl in this case

Just got rid of my gaming PC - Not touched a game in months.

I am going to go with a M4 Mini - However reading a bit on monitors I am a little worried about how it will look on an 3440*1440 resolution? I have been toying with the idea of switching to a 4K monitor but not quite yet.

Will it look terrible? the UI that is.

Much of it will depend what you’re used to and what your tolerances are. It won’t look terrible but I can assure you a 4k display will look considerably better.
When I finished with my gaming pc the UW monitor was first to go - I had zero need for one outside of gaming.

I may just get a new monitor at the same time. I do enjoy the UW monitor though. I'll get the Mac Mini first and see how it looks.

I have a few games that I'll be rebuilding my PC for later on in the year, so with that in mind i'll probably be going for a dual display set up (probably a 32/34 inch main, with a 27 inch in landscape just off to my right) - having jumped to and from UW in the past, I would suggest that if you're concerned about screen estate, that might be an option to look at.
