Mad Onion became 3DMark so they never really went away. I loved them since the 2000SE and i would always go back to all of the old ones every time i upgraded my Graphic Card to run the older ones with ever higher resolutions and frame rates to see the improvements. But admittedly i haven't run any benchmarks since Heaven in the mid-2010's

I also remember running Final Reality.

Spending hours just to get a few extra points on 3DMark. Pretty much everyone's sig had their 3Dmark score. I am sure there was even a leader board IIRC?

Things I always remember were the Athlon Mobile XP which had unlocked multipliers and were a massive bargain. Also the Radeon R9500Pro that just needed a bios flash to unlock all the extra pixel shaders.

It is completely different now as even an old 5-6 year PC can still play a modern game whereas back then every frame was critical!
