Having been approached by a company to join their team with a decent salary increase, I left a fairly decent job to start work for them at the beginning of October.

Essentially I work as an IT project manager consultant at client sites, which is what I did at my previous company (I also have a previous background in software development).

Since I started, they haven't been able to place me at the client as they had planned. So after just under 7 weeks, they have made me redundant.

There is no protection in UK employment law from these circumstances (incredibly poor planning on their part), so I'm now out of a job right before Xmas

As I've literally not had any work to do, I've already been looking at other opportunities over the past 3 weeks.

I couldn't agree more with what you've said and with hindsight the grass isn't always greener. In real terms you don't get any employment protection until you hit 2 years service, so any job move is always a gamble

I guess some would ask whether you investigated the new job enough to not see this coming?
Regardless though, there are always jobs floating about in IT (or other simpler work if you were really stuck). I think no matter what anyone says, you will be kicking yourself for jumping from a stable job. Get signed up with the local agencies etc to at least get a foot hold back in the job market again, temp etc to see you through.

Jesus Christ that's appalling, I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but it does make me wonder when every job thread on here the standard OCUK response is "Go for the money!!!"

Is there any chance you old company haven't replaced you (don't tell them the whole story but just say broken promises etc.) and you could slip back there?

How did you leave it with your old job? Do you know if they've recruited for your old role yet?

Obviously not ideal and a bit cap in hand, but old job is better than no job if it's an option.

Go crawling back to your old job. If you were decent and good at your job they may have you back. Close to xmas it sucks but worth a go.

In fairness his experience is not that common. Companies don't tend to hire people for jobs that don't exist, so usually the advice is sound. So the OP got shafted. But I doubt he'll be unemployed for long.

Sorry to hear that dude.

There's tons of IT Project Manager jobs being advertised though bud, sure it won't be long before you find another.

Monster email me a list as long as my arm every week with new ones - stick your CV on there.

That's bad luck right there. But as others have said I'd ask my old job. I can only imagine if the haven't hired you'd be top of the list to hire again and if you explain that they broke promises etc I'm sure they'll understand and not worry about your loyalty to them in the future.

That's awful. The company will struggle to hire in future after doing this.

If only that was the case. They'll still get 100 C.V's when they next advertise a position.

Sorry to hear about that. Feel free to name and shame the company.... Its not like they can withhold your payout.... unless your selling an exclusive to a newspaper....

With any luck something comes your way.... Maybe £2 investment in the euro on Friday.... £117m....
