Just finished Mafia 2 and have to say I really enjoyed it, the ending was awesome which is rare these days and the cut scenes and gun fights were epic

There were some let downs, the city wasnt as good as in GTAIV I personally dont think and the same for the car handling, it ran at 60FPS most of the time at max settings but some parts of the city had noticable FPS drops and other parts were fine which didnt make sense but other than that a very good game with a gripping story and good combat mechanics topped with very under rated graphics

Any DLC recomended?

I was on chapter 8 when I alt tabbed out of it, then it crashed when I alt+tabbed back in. After that it would no longer load any saves, not even completed saves I downloaded. I was really enjoying it, but I fear I may never see that awesome ending if it means grinding those first 8 chapters again.

i thought it was an empty over hyped game and pretty boring all things considered.

i got near the end but didnt bother to complete it

I got it free with my GTX470 i enjoyed it, but if i had paid full retail price for it would have been disapointed, to short, and lacking the overall interactivity of the GTA games

A solid game and well worth a look at £10 or less

have to agree, it is a pretty good game (picked it up cheap on the PS3 this week), it has its frustrations but overall quite enjoying it. would also be interested to know if the DLC is worthwhile

I thought it was a really enjoyable game.

A lot of the criticism of the game relate to the disappointment that it was not as much of a sandbox as GTA IV. Basically they don't make much use of the fantastic city they created. e.g there are no side-missions and little point of doing anything other than proceeding through the story. It is reasonable to want more from the game, but you have to remember that GTA IV cost shedloads, and you cant expect anything else to match it.
I would give it 8/10, it was really enjoyable without being exceptional and would definitely recommend it to people at the £10 i paid for it.

I really enjoyed it. It has a sense of immersion and a great storyline that makes it one of my favourite titles of the last few years. yes, it's quite short, but it's not that short, it only seems that way because once you're done with the story that's it. No free roam or side missions like GTA. If it had those, it would have been a masterpiece I think. Graphics are also great, really beautiful.

I thoroughly enjoyed mafia 2 :). I went into it not expecting much (reviews said it was pretty poor) but I really liked it. By no means is it a sandbox game, but then neither was the first. I think a lot of people wanted a GTA clone, but that's not what it's meant to be. It's a linear, story driven game, and if you go into it expecting that then I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!

The first is a better game, but then I'd rank it as amongst my top 10 games of all time :p. By no means was mafia 2 a let down though, and for the price on steam during a deal it's incredible.

Meh, it just didn't work for me at all - I guess I continually compared it to Mafia 1 all the time; which I still maintain is one of the best PC games of the last decade.

My issue was that I never felt any kind of attachment to Vito or his 'friend'. They both felt like very empty characters, and I never felt like the story was actually going anywhere, other than meandering along. Heck, even the ending was poor.

Although I thought the overlap with Mafia1 was a great touch..."Mr Salieri sends his regards", the graphics were decent and the city itself was well designed and fleshed out. Combat was good.

But compared to the story from the first game...there's just no comparison, and that was the real kicker for me; I expected more of the same, which it didn't deliver.

i too enjoyed Mafia 2 for what it was - a story driven adventure with a very well designed city in the background.
As for DLC, i'm in the same boat - is it any good?

I d/l Joes Adventures when it was on a steam special. It's not really any different to Mafia 2, so worth it if you want more of the same.

a lot of the missions are timed though, which is weird, but the time limits aren't rock solidly difficult or anything though.

Joe is pretty good, has few full blown super good missions with cutscenes, and plenty arcade style missions, that even if they are with only text briefings, are still very fun. Jimmy DLCs are pretty worthless though, just more arcade stuff without any connection to main game storywise.

As for game itself, worse than Mafia 1 (which was 10/10 masterpiece) but still a great game on its own.

I just completed this today (which is rare, I hardly ever finish games) and I really enjoyed it. I have all the DLC from the Steam sale but I think I'll get on with another game now, I need to start Mass Effect 2.

I enjoyed it a lot but i was a little dissapointed with the flow of the story and i felt it could have done with a few more optional missions at certain points to flesh things out a bit. I'm not saying GTA style necessarily and i'm certainly not looking for it to go sandbox but the story seemed to jump a fair bit between plot points and also went a bit OTT with enemies and 'splodes. It could have done with a bit more (optional) donkey work missions to round things out and give context and flavour which would have accentuated the main story. As it was it seemed everything Vito did ended up EPIC and involved gunning down hundreds which didn't really suit the story and caused a big shift in tone between cutscenes and gameplay. It was like they had two design directors constantly pulling between Mafia sim and action game and the end result wasn't too satisfying in either way. The excessess made the extreme mundanity of certain bits feel odd.

Of course the first was capable of excess as well and i wouldn't call it realistic or anything but it did feel a bit more grounded and coherent.

My other big problem was the fist fighting. The whole prison section was an utter chore as a result. Not that it wasn't a passable approximation of boxing it was that it was far too clean and civilised to represent the "fight for your life (or your ass as the case may be)" confrontations Vito was in. More grappling even with *spits* QTEs would have worked better.

STill there's glimmers of greatness there. I do wonder what Illusion Softworks would have produced without the 2k goons looking over their shoulders and pushing them in a different direction.
