Happy new year all :)

I've just completed the best gaming experience I've had since Mass Effect 1, Mafia 2. The game eurogamer give 4/10 for! Will be very cautious using that site now...

It was an utterly compelling experience from start till finish, an experience that I do not have with a game often.

10/10 as far as I'm concerned.

Enough of that, my question is simply this:

What is the closest game to Mafia 2? I'm tempted by Mafia 1 but the controls look too faffy for me. The game would have to be compatible with a 360 pad.

I've played GTA IV and completed it, no aspect of that was better then Mafia 2, except the rockstar humour of course.

The only game I can think of is Liberty City stories, which I have ordered already.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Dave

Completed them all mate, I personally find very few similarities between those also, they are rpg's!

Thanks though :)

Edit:

Actually I can see where you're coming from Amnesia, I think. If I hadn't already played them they would have been ideal in a sense :)

I thought it was great too, I'm with Amnesia, ME2 game of the year 2010 IMO

edit: If you've played it maybe the Mafia II DLC, although I'm not finding it as good, OT how was Dragon Age, how long is it? I'm gonna play soon

Dragon Age is brilliant as a modern day rpg it is arguably the best, that will pull you in and not let go, like Mafia 2 in a sense did to me, so I can see how Amnesia's recommendations were actually very good from that point of view.

The PC version is MUCH better then the console version too(Dragon Age).

Edited:

It's long, I haven't completed the Awakening add-on so with that I would exoect it to be quite an undertaking. I presume you'll get the game of the year pack?

yeah I got the game of the year pack in the sales, You should try Just Cause 2, seems like a mission driven world with aspects similar to GTA type games, maybe Red dead redemption if you have a PS3

If you enjoyed it then I can stress enough how much you should play the first. It's an absolute masterpiece.

You really thought it was that good? Jeez.

:(

/on topic, try the first Mafia, a far better game if you look past the graphics :)

Assassins Creed 2 ?

I never gave the first one much time, so didn't enjoy it, but have spent close to 20hrs on AC2.

Pretty good voice acting, charcters & story so far.

Gameplay can be a bit samey, like all games I suppose, but enjoyable in bursts.

Combat isn't the greatest, as everyone knows, but assassinating someone from above or when running somehow never gets old :)

Thanks for the recommendations guys.

I've went a bit mental actually.

Had to buy Mafia (PC)

I'm dusting off my PS2 for:

The Warriors
Godfather
Scarface

Better then the steam deals though (apart from Mafia II for £4.99!)

£14.54inc delivery for the lot(from the river shop)

Thanks again, much appreciated.

I've not played it but I heard the saboteur is an open world third person shooter much like gta4 and mafia 2 is.Check it out, you might like it.

hmmm THAT looks ideal :) overlooked like Mafia II it seems too!

Perfect recommendation mate, same period etc.

How this slipped under my radar I have no idea...

Thanks a bunch

I've been playing this on and off for a while, in fact I am now actually. It hasn't or didn't pull me in and demand my attention like Mafia 2 or indeed Mass Effect did.

Don't know why, as it gets just about everything right.

yeah, I did the same as you (loved mafia 2 and wanted something similar) so I looked around and seen this. You can get it at a reasonable price aswell (I think I saw it for £6) I would have it by now if it wasn't for the mountain of games I've got to get through:)

I've got a ton of games too redrooster, but once I started playing this Mafia II I didn't stop. I've bought far too many apparently highly rated games that I have decided I am not going to waste time on now, money badly spent, I should have researched my games more saying that if I'd done that I still wouldn't of played Mafia II!

The thing about Mafia II is that it is RELAXING to play, I only got irritated a couple of times it mellows you out and is constantly interesting and quite beatiful to look at even on my basic PC, stunning programming in my opinion(which puts the mighty rockstar to shame) immaculate attention to detail. The way computer games should be done, to entertain you, rather than irritae you with timed missions, daft bugs, performance problems and crap combat and driving, such as GTA delivers. I completed GTA on the PS3 and only think I did because I was waiting for this 10/10 rated game to show me why it was rated 10/10 and it never did.

Alpha Protocol if you can get it cheap is pretty good game.

Maybe check the Splinter Cell games too or Hitman games.

When I first got mafia 2 and it got to the level where you get dropped off and its been snowing (where you see it for the first time) and "let it snow" song is playing it made me feel all christmassy inside (lol) and I just wanted to explore everything in the snow. You then walk along and people stop and talk to you in the street. I know it sounds daft but its touches like that, that made it good for me.

Exactly how I felt actually, I totally agree. Without spoiling it for anyone it was class when the season changed too imo(from some bad times for our hero to the new music and flashing colours of summer, it felt like good times again for him, a new start, which nailed the situation perfectly).

It is almost a mix between heavy rain and GTA in my opinion, but far less irritating than both.

Other modern games that hooked me like this and I felt were executed brilliantly:

Farenheit
Mass Effect 1
Heavy Rain
Dragon Age
Splinter Cell
Alan Wake
KOTOR

Not all were as good, in fact maybe just Mass Effect 1 and KOTOR were.

Would be interesting to see a similar list from you as I think we have similar tastes.
