Magento help re multiple products

Is it possible to set up a product in Magento that has multiple products some of which have VAT on and some dont. Not being very familiar with it I cant seem to find a way to work it out with add it in as one product but perhaps there is a way to put the products in seperatelty and then asign the vat rate to each so that overall it is correct?

Edit - forgot to mention that its currently set up with each item set up in custom options so that they can select the flavour of each item.
