Through the 6 degrees of Youtube separation I happened across a magnet fishing video which piqued my intertest. I watched through a few other vids and thought it looked interesting, and having a river a literal stone’s throw from me, and a few other bodies of water within a short distance, I thought I’d give it a go.

I bought a starter kit from Amazon and went out for a couple of hours this afternoon. This is my first haul:

Two 1p pieces and some sort of decorative thing. It feels very fragile and thoroughly rusted. I shall get a nail brush next time I go shopping and try and clean it up.

I think I’m hooked already, excuse the pun. There were a few large objects I caught, but the magnet wasn’t powerful enough to pull them out. I could feel them loosening from the silt, but the magnet kept breaking off. I know it’s probably just a shopping trolly or an old bike, but it’s so damn tantalizing!

Seen quite a few vids on this, some obviously staged with them pulling really valuable stuff out of a river that looks like it's been in the river 5 minutes.

Do you watch River Hunters? That’s a great show?

I wonder if half the things people pull up are other people's magnets that have fallen off.

Apparently James Haskell is into this, he was saying on TalkSport the other day.

This just conjured up memories of playing the magnet fishing game as a youngster where you catch the cardboard fish with little magnets in a box shaped sea.

Sounds more interesting than regular fishing to me. Would have thought that everything you pull up will be rubbish, but depending on where the river is and what's nearby you might get some more interesting rubbish.

Plenty of rivers near me - maybe I should give it a go.

I've also become victim of the youtube algorithm and found magnet fishing, very much enjoying it.

Watched a few videos of an Aussie guy in Amsterdam fishing up bikes and safes... its all they ever catch.

The canal system in Amsterdam seems to be constructed of 99% bicycles.

Shouldn't be too long then before you are also temporarily hooked on WW2 metal detecting vids in the battlegrounds of Poland and Ukraine. Some of them combine the two. It seems every other pond in the Czech Republic has at least half a dozen MP40 machine guns in it.

Yeah it was those that lead me to it, was watching someone doing it in Hurtgen Forest and then the Ukraine.

The rabbit hole is immense!

I threw my neodymium magnet in against the rushing water, watched with baited breath the as the current pulled it downstream until I felt an almost whip like motion on the rope I was holding as the magnet homed in on it's target like a heat seek missile.

pulling with almost hulk like strength I shout we've got another one grinning as the local supermarket trolley emerges from the waters.

nope, never been but saw some guns and knives recovered on youtube, probably better to go metal detecting but also more expensive
