Magnetic swipe card readers

Does anyone know much about these as I need to use one for my final year project at uni. Do they require drivers and any specific OS? Every one that i have look at so far mentions nothing about compatibility to whatever machine its connected to.

The magnetic card readers I have are independant of OS (built into keyboard), and they return the read information as a string of text.

They (in theory) should just function as a HID, regardless of host OS.

The first three that just came up in a quick google search all mention they are compatible for PC and MAC. I think you're doing Google wrong.

They should work, pretty basic things.
