Gents, I don't venture in here as a rule, so please be gentle with me. ;)

We need to replace the tyres on my wifes 04 Focus (1.6 Zetec). I've been told that savings are to be had by buying tyres on-line and then getting a local garage to fit and balance. Rather than paying them for the tyres/change as a job lot.

Question is, is this correct; and if savings are worth the hassle, could anyone recommend an on-line tyre seller?

Thanks in anticipation.

what tyre size are on the Focus? Generally less worth the hassle on smaller (i.e. cheaper) tyres as the savings are proportionally smaller.

I think most of us have decided that unless you're buying specialist tyres that a normal place won't be able to get hold of, or unless you have access to fit them yourself, the fee that tyre places charge to fit the new tyres and dispose of the old is so high it negates any savings.

I've always found worthwhile savings be it buying R15 GSD3's for the MX5 or ASY2 / FK452 / Verds on R18's.

Thanks for the swift responses. :)

They are 195/60 R15 88H, I think pretty much bog standard budget tyres are required as all the car is used for is a short commute and shopping etc.

Certainly wouldn't be looking at specialist tyres, and I overlooked disposal of the old ones. Interesting.

I bought some off Camskill.com as I find they are the cheapest for the tyres I wanted.

Local fitter was £153 each fully fitted, camskill was £120 delivered. Fitting was £12 each (Includes valves, balancing and disposal). Total saving of £42 :)

certainly worth using camskill prices to try to get them to price match. work on about £10 per tyre for fitting etc. some people will quote less but this the going rate I have found unless your mate works there etc etc.

Blackcircles is who I use, there's also tesco tyres, which is the same company but you get clubcard points too. Not all places will be happy to fit tyres bought elsewhere.

My local places charges me between 0 and 30 quid for all 4 tyres fitted. Depends if I'm getting other cars worked on in the same week etc.

Call local places to see if they can match prices you find online. Sometimes they will be very close or cheaper. Shop around

Personally, I've had a better experience with Blackcircles over camskill, especially regarding info when a tyre is not in stock

I went Camskill supply only and black circles supply only, I then had trouble as none of my local places would fit tyres I supplied, I then phoned my mate Trev who supplied and fitted them for less than me messing around with delivery and finding a fitter etc.

If you chose a tyre, price the fitting or use black circles supplied and fitted price then negotiate with a local fitter for supply and fit.

It all depends on fitting costs, if you can find somewhere that will fit them cheaply then there are some big savings to be made. The local places around here all charge about £12-15 per tyre which doesn't make it so worthwhile, I only do it because none of the tyre fitters can sell me the tyres I want.

Think I need to get into the tyre business £60 to fit 4 took the guy around 20 minutes and that's assuming he made nothing on the cost of the tyres, I've found places that can beat camskill and the like on the tyres themselves.

Try event tyres mate, not far off camskills prices but they come to you and fit them. They always work out cheapest for me.

Thanks guys, with the local garages wanting anything between £12 and £18 (plus vat ) to fit it's just not worth it for the Focus.

However, the pointers are appreciated as it looks as if I could save a few bob when I need to re-new the tyres on my Octavia.

Thanks to all who posted
