Main oven stopped heating

Hi all.

Bought a house a few months ago and a few days ago the main oven stopped working. The light and fan come on but no heat. The upper oven/grill works fine, but cooks very unevenly so I would like to fix the main oven.

Looking online it is likely to be the element, but I have been told that it could be the thermostat.

Anything I can try out before buying parts I don't need?

I guess a duff element would be open circuit, do you have a multimeter at all?
Thermostats would need bringing to their rated temperature to test, however they do tend to be cheap.

I haven't got anything to test really. I have a 240V engineer's screwdriver though but I am not sure I want to put >10amps though it (current element is 2500W rated).

The old element looks fine and has no breakages or sparkly bits on, but it is several mm thick it isn't a weedy bit of wire.

It will be more likely to be the element than the thermostat.

Yeah, I agree with this, it is much more likely to be the element, but the thermostat will be cheaper, you could try and pick up a replacement thermostat cheap and when that doesn't work, get element.

You could also google the oven and see if anyone has complained about one of the two failing, it might be a common problem.

Had similar in a previous flat.

The element decided to give up the ghost...and it was cunningly linked to the main CB for the flat tripping out too.

Bought a replacement element for £20 and swapped it out myself...20 mins of wok and oven back heating

When I had removed the element I did notice that one portion had appeared to have melted and was considerably thinner than the rest of the element.

The fan one in ours was actually behind the fan plate, so that had to be removed to see in and also carry out the replacement. See here for some similar images and also here for a guide on what is what.

Is fairly easy to do but as the man says ......MAKE SURE THE OVEN IS TURNED OFF AT THE MAINS SWITCH. I would even go as far as turning off at the main circuit breaker if it is on a separate circuit..better to be safe than crispy and dead

usually the element, just try to find any maintenance manual as I did before swapping the element in my built in oven and it gave some useful tips and warnings such as - ensure you don't drop this small panel down the back or you'll need to pull the over out of the units to retrieve it!

Think it was 2 screws, one little clip and the job was done. literally 5 mins work and £25!
