Major Oblivion Glitch - missing item

Well I have to say Oblivion had been one of the best games I'd played in recently memory - great story, funny, and super open ended. I've now realised that this open ended game has a huge problem - it hasn't been properly bug tested.

I'm going to keep this as unspecific and spoiler free as possible. I was doing the Mage's Guild initiation where you have to obtain a recommendation from every Guild head in each city in Cyrodil. Fine. I'd gotten 3/5 and moved onto the 4th in Cheydenhal. Basically this involves going down a well to retrieve an item.

Problem is I needed to use a spell that needs 25 alteration to go under the water long enough. No problem I thought - I'll just play other missions and train up my Alteration and come back to this one later. As it turns out that was a huge mistake.

So off I went, gaining two levels and amassing 3hrs of play time (that's 3hrs of play time, not time I spent playing the game - think about twice that of actual time spent in game). Finally I had another item that would mean I didn't have to use alteration... Head back down to the well and guess what... The item isn't there. The green map marker is, but the item itself isn't there. So I tried going back a few saves.... I had to go back 25 save games to get to a point where the 'item' was there and that was back when I was first given the quest.

So I've lost about 3-4 dungeons, 3 fighter's guild quests, about 3 random quests and all the weapons/potions/experience and items I've found between then and now and also gone from Level 7 to Level 5.

I've tried everything I can think of to rescue it. I've cleared the cache, tried loading at different points before I had certain items, loading the game that has the item, then my latest save and it still won't work.

Anyone have any ideas?

I'm completely gutted, I'd finally gotten some good weapons, and had reached a good level where battles seemed more skill than luck. I just can't believe they didn't catch this bug.

If anyone can fix this for me I'll be extremely grateful.

Pete

can you 'make this quest the active quest' it? This wasnt previously in the games but in another similar quest i had KILLED the carachter needed for the quest, clicked 'make active quest' and i see her walkin round the corner large as life lol, maybe this will do it?

Ive seen another bug where i went to see a prisoner in jail then guard goes ill get key blah blah went down saw person in jail opened door i spoke to him and he walked out the jail and guard never done anything. :p :D

Tried that... Tried switching between quests multiple times and it didn't work either. :( I'm just gutted and really don't feel like playing through all that again as exactly the same thing could happen again.

Ive done this quest twice now with 2 different characters. The item you need is in the following location:

SPOILER WARNING!!!!!!!

get naked outside of the well to give yourself 150 enc spare as the ring of burden weighs that amount. This means the spell the argonian gives you isnt needed at all. When you go into the well go through the small gap and go straight to the dead guy whos on the right. He has the ring on his corpse. Swim out and go back into the mages guild for the next step then go back to the well to get your dropped items. Sorted :P

Should sort you out

I also didn't even use the spell your given, I just swam straight to the location and got the item and out again, I just made sure I had plenty of space available to carry the thing.

me too, forgot i was carrying it after hehe

Interesting, this quest is one of several I'm currently involved in (I'm playing it so randomly I have 7 active quests, and I play them when I feel like not exploring/treasure hunting/etc). I'll make the effort to play this tonight and see whether the bug is present for me too.

Slight problem with that... The corpse is gone. This is apparently a widespread bug and means I will have to go way back through my saves :(

Hmm, when i went there the corpse was there.. how long after does it disappear?

Gords Personal Spolier [Method for returning]

I went in, and pocketed the coin before turning 180 and dropping it, moving the otherside, pick up, turn 180, drop.. repeat. My ingenius method of not having to drop any of my stuff was only foiled when i reached a hill....

I don't know, I'll have to go back through and check exactly when it happened. Basically as far as I can tell if you accept any other mission it screws it up.

sorry to hear about the problem :( maybe itd pay to stick a new save in say every 2-5hours? my earliest secondary save would lose me 10 or more hours!! Thanks for the heads up on this though as im just making my way through mages guild reccommendation (as well as trying to find sodding bears to get me back into the fighters guild and generally robbing peeps blind and fencing off for the theives :)) so i'll try and make sure i do this one sharpish.

Basically, don't go to the Cheydenhal Mage's Guild to do this quest until you've got 25 alteration to be safe.

I have been saving every 5 minutes, unfortunately that doesn't help me. I have to go back so long because it seems to be if you accept any other quest after starting that Cheydenhal Mage's Recommendation Quest it screws up the game and the 'item' goes missing. So I have to go way back and lose all the experience/levelling etc that I did to try and enable me to do the quest in the first place. Ironic, no?

it is the will of the nine my friend, do not doubt it :D

I could well be in trouble with this then, I have the quest already, don't have 25 alteration, and have been doing other quests. I also only have the 1 save file :/ I will seriously not be happy if it screws up my game.

buy an easy spell of 'protect'. Cast repeatedly on self till you get alteration of 25 try it sharpish.

Just go down the well naked, easy. Your stuff will still be in the street when you come back up.

I actually realised when I was at the bottom of the well that my alteration wasn't high enough so I worked it up at the bottom of the well, thank God for water breathing ;)

In the end I realised I could just ditch a bunch of equipment and come back for it later.

Do you have a console in Oblivion like you did in Morrowind? If you do, couldn't you spawn the item?

There is a console on the PC version, I'm not aware of any way to bring up a console on the 360.
