Major problem with steam

Anyone else have this problem with steam?

It occurs in both L4D, the L4D2 demo and CS:S, every time I join a server in MP I get about 20 seconds of play before I get the red connection error message at the top right of the screen.

In CS:S it only happens on the first server I join after booting up CS, in L4D and the L4D2 Demo it happens in every server I join without fail, the only way I can play is if I can rejoin through friends already in the server. So far every game I own on steam is pretty much unplayable in multiplayer because of this.

I'm running vista x64 and my net connection is BT unlimited (6-8MB) on a BT homehub wirelessly connected to my pc with a netgear wg111t USB dongle.

I've already contacted steam support, and as predicted, they were useless.
 
I tend not to have that much time for multiplayer games, but I decided to give TF2 another shot. I haven't played it for many months. I am experiencing the exact problems you describe, and I am with BT Broadband, with a BT Homehub. In fact, I haven't been able to play a single game as yet because of this. I don't think it's steam though! Notice a pattern?
 
The reason I think it's steam or steam networking is because it happens across several different steam titles, i've tried everything I can think of but can't get it to work.
