As title, I want my server to go into standby/lowest power mode at say 2am and then wake up on its own at say 9am and carry on..........reason being I'm not awake at these times and wish to save electricity.

Is this possible and if so how ?

Is it windows or *ix?

Windows just create a batch file to do a shutdown -h and use the windows scheduler to schedule it in.

For *in you can do the same via the system cron.

To bring it back up you would need either to send it a magic packet (Wake on LAN) or some kind of UPS control.

Most bios can wakeup at set times?

A lot of BIOS's do have this ability but you'd need to check.

If its windows you can use the task scheduler for the Sleep/Standy/Hibernate/Shutdown but as someone else mentioned you'd need to use WakeOnLan or the BIOS for the startup.

One of the reasons I love my Synology, it has support for this, I get it start up and shut down at different times depending which I want it powered on.

I use free software called Smartpower to do this, you can set up conditions where it won't go to sleep until they are met. The main one I use is a certain level of traffic over the NIC card to prevent it shutting down when downloading or streaming video. The software then sets a windows power event to wake the pc backup automatically at the time you set.
