Ive got a week off so on thursday im going to give my car some TLC. Normally when i wash the car i hose it down, use a sponge + car shampoo all over the car, rinse all that off, use a shammy leather over the entire car and then vac the inside out. However since ive got so much time im going to try and make it gleam!

So what do i need? Im going to go to get some car cleaning things but what is there to get? Should i wax the car? How do i do this?
Car is a fiesta by the way, oh and what about for the alloy wheels, whats the best way to do them?

wash car with sheep wash mit, clay bar it, polish it with some scratch x or autoglym SRP then wax it with decent wax - job done - do the polish bit 2 - 3 times edepending on scratches

Wash mit, good quality carwash, Perhaps claybar, Stage one paint cleaner, polish, wax.

I use megs stage1 / claybar / gold class wax, autoglym polish.

You can do other steps its upto you.

I wouldn't scratch x the whole car.

Whats the best way to get rid of all the dead flies on the front of my bonnet/bumper, i can scrub away at them till imblue in the face and they just don't budge!

Autoglym Intensive Tar Remover is a godsend ;)

If you run out, don't spend 5 hours tcutting the car instead, it takes a lot of effort :(

Not on tar it would seem, i spent a good hour or 2 trying to shift all the tar spots. It did it eventually then i finished the job with a clay bar.

Claybar is great for getting rid of flies etc.

Megs 3 step is a good start, but swap stage 2 out for Autoglym super resin polish.

A decent wish mitt is well worth it too, and use two buckets one for the soapy water and one for rinsing stops swirl marks aswell.

Get some microfibre towels for polishing etc, I love these things.

ive tried a few megs products and didnt like them. loads of style over substance imo

people ive known who have used the 3 step thing have said the wax was utter pap too.

they never do well in independant tests too haha

Dont forget to clean the door sills and around the door itself(use polish if you must),I always think it makes a huge difference. Threat yourself and do the same to the boot as well.

I think we should have a sticky for cleaning cars, same question keeps popping up when the good weather is here.

Good idea :)

I don't understand the concept of the 'two bucket method'... Do you need 2 sponges or something??

No, you just need 2 buckets. Fill one with warm water and put your shampoo in this, then fill the other with clean warm water.

Then after washing an area of the car dip your wash mitt into the clean water and swish it about to remove dust and grit. Then put the mitt back into the soapy water to wash another area, and repeat until your car is sparkling clean.

Doing this basically stops most of the grit from mixing in with the soapy water so its not being dragged all over your paint making swirls.

The megs products are good, altough not the best. If buying from halfords then possibly the best. Collinite wax is pretty good and poor boys stuff is well looking at though.

The best advice is to stop using a sponge. Unless its a zmyol sponge.

Ahh, yeah pretty pointless if using a sponge anyway lol.

Get yourself a wool wash mitt and a microfiber wash mitt, well worth the investment if you don't want it to get any worse.
