hi everybody,

before i start installing vista business (totally free for student :0 ), i would like to know if i can make a backup of the hard drive after i have installed all the drives and stuff like, i dont want to have to insert all the cds to get the drivers.

If you still don't know what i mean, do you remember tiny computers used to ship a restore cd, i think it norton ghost or something??? and free program would be really good, i dont want to pay any more money.

thanks

Well I use Acronis TrueImage, does a superb job of creating backup disk images easily (wizard driven) and can restore from a bootable cd which can be a lifesaver!

Not free, but worth every penny imo ...

Vista come with it's own Backup feature which wil create an image of your system. This can be used to restore the system in the event of a disk crash or something. I normally update this when I perform system maintenance which includes driver updates. The image is stored on an external HDD.

I use syncbackse to perform backups of my volitile data, which is stored in it's own partition.

As the last poster says, Vista Business, not only has System Restore, but a complete backup utility (see Here), that can make backups of complete partitions etc, and also can be used to restore any partition (including OS part), it actually works very well, so instead of getting any 3rd party software, I would use this. :)

On my home PC (Vista Business) I also use the inbuilt m$ inbuilt one.

I would recomened that you create a full backup to an external drive and dont forget to set up a scheduled backup.(I have mine weekly)

The standard vista backup also integrates well into shadow copy for simplified restores.

Also I would recomend that you perform a FULL system backup every other month to ease full system recovery in the event of total faliure. (And delete the old set if you need the space!)

just wondering, once i make a backup and say i stored it on hdd e: and say the system crashes, how would i go about restoring it? is it stored as an image of the hdd?

I've tried the Vista built in one, however it tries to make back ups of the other hard drives in my system which means I can't store it any where. :(

Going to try, Acronis True Image. :)

With the trial version you can't. You can only get into the recovery mode but go no further unless you buy it. But I promise you won't go back to anything else.

If you have either a Seagate or Maxtor HDD in your system you can use either DiskWizard or MaxBlast which is basically Acronic True Image 10 Home with a couple of very minor features removed (for XP only, NOT for Vista).

Otherwise Here is a very good deal on ATI 11 Home with Acronis Disk Director Suite 10 free, use the code ATI11Xmas and the total comes to around £21. :)

Never used true image but I assume it'd be similar to ghost, where you'd have boot media which would then ask you to browse for an image. It'd then ask for a destination partition or drive to recreate :)
