I have several CD's which are either very old or are no longer in production.

If I want to make backups of these is there a recommended method and CD make to use of will any half decent CD do?

I have all my albums ripped to MP3's but since upgrading my system they don't sound as good as the CD's which is why I want to make copies to play.

Would a direct slow speed copy using a standard disk-to-disk copying program not work just as good as ripping to wav or am I missing something?

Yes, but then you still have to rip them again if you want to put them on the computer, in the lossless format.
