Making a complaint, what should I expect?

Hey all,

To cut a long story short, I went into our local town on Monday and opened a new monthly phone contract but when I got it home I realised the phone had a faulty camera. Now this is no-ones fault of course, so I took it back to where I got it from about 2 hours later and they offered to change it as it was not fit for purpose. They didn't have one in stock so said they could get one delivered to me the very next day. The receipt they gave me stated that the delivery time frame was from 8am - 6pm but the phone did not turn up. I phoned them and they said they contacted the delivery company (yodel yuk) but they know nothing about it so they have launched a 24hour investigation.

This means when they finally figure out where my phone is that they will obviously try to arrange another delivery date with me. I obviously have just wasted a whole day and will now need to book another day off.

Basically, I want to complain as they have wasted my time (a whole day!) and I now have no phone to use (I cancelled my previous contract as I needed the PAC code to keep the same number) but I'm not sure what I should expect them to do. I'm not really happy with a 'sorry' this time around, is it unreasonable to expect a delivery where there is only like an hour time frame or similar??

What should I do ol' wise OCUK'rs :)

Edited as I had worded my OP wrong.

From what i'v heard about them, i guess it's yodel who messed up.
I doubt there's much that the phone shop could have done more.

That 'money expert' bloke on Watchdog did something on this which left Ann wotshername dumbfounded.
Apparently you booked time off so they owe you nothing because you already booked time off!
You will now book some more time off which means they still owe you nothing because you are arranging it.

If they can't deliver to your work, get them to deliver it to the store so you don't have to take a day off work but you can just go in on your lunch break or whatever and pick it up.

Yep, totally mental. You need to sort your prioritises out

I don't understand? The whole reason I want to complain and have asked you guys is because I can't really miss another days work. Getting it delivered to my work or going to the shop on a workday isn't an option for me otherwise I wouldn't have needed to ask or make this thread. I asked if it is reasonable to expect a delivery to suit me, i.e an hours time frame or similar because then I don't have to 'mess my priorities out' as you say. This situation has also left me without a phone to use.

Boo hoo, get it delivered to your work and stop moaning for the sake of moaning.

Can't get it delivered to work as its not allowed at our place. I explained this when they offered the next day thing and they said its fine it will be there.

Yodel know nothing about the parcel so it isn't necessarily their fault, which is why I am 'moaning for the sake of moaning'. If they said that yodel knew about the parcel but failed to deliver or whatever, then fair enough as we know what these companies are like. Still at the end of the day, they offered me a service and didn't deliver? Am I unreasonably moaning because they have let me down?

No, it isn't reasonable. They have more parcels than just yours.

What?? Most courier companies offer a delivery service where you can choose an exact delivery time...they already do this as a service. I was implying that is it unreasonable to get the phone company to arrange for this service as 'compensation' for missing today's delivery? I apologize if it came across that they should stop everything just to deliver my phone lol, that was not what I meant.

Is that still unreasonable? If so, then fair enough, I'll just wait and do as Daz suggested and get it to store and pick up on next day off but it means being without a phone until then :(

Compensation for what?

Do you offer your place of work compensation for when you make a mistake, what monetary value do you place on your mistakes?

Madness, its frustrating when stuff like this happens but part of life - work out a plan with the store to get it delivered or picked up and borrow/use an old phone in the time being.

People just moan these days to get something for nothing. Get over this really small inconvenience and get on with your life........

Without your phone.

It's not unreasonable to ask for a 1 hour time frame, or that delivery companies should be able to provide one (although most don't) even if it's the day before (they must have finalised their rounds list by then) but it would be unreasonable to expect to choose one. If customers picked their own time slots the delivery round would be totally inefficient and there'd be driving all over the place and their delivery rate would drop massively.

I'd suspect most delivery companies don't like giving times because of the nature of traffic, break downs, ad-hearing the various enforced breaks on drivers directed by the EU etc.

This situation has also left me without a phone to use.

I'd be annoyed as well. Pick it up from the shop or get it delivered to your work.

Also write to the company and explain how disappointed you are, and that they should consider appointing a courier who will give a 1 hour slot. Say you feel that it's harmed your view of them.

They'll make a gesture of goodwill, or at least in my experience companies do if you give them honest and constructive feedback.
