Making a floating shelf?

Just had a thought. You could use m8 threaded bar into rawlbolts as said and use a grub scrub above or below thyself wherever is best hidden to lock into the threaded bar going into the shelf so it holds firm. Easy to remove later then

I'm guessing you mean grub screw. How would this work?

You could just use a small wood screw underneath where the threaded bar goes into the shelf. You can get loads of different sizes at screwfix for a couple of quid. Get a size that will be just below the surface when it hits the threaded rod so its not seen. Assuming you use 10mm threaded rod and put it in the middle, 25x3.5 screws would do.

I really would just glue the shelf to the wall after doing the threaded rods bit. Just enough adhesive to stop it coming away, but not so much that it causes a major issue to remove.

Haha well spotted. Drill 175mm into the shelf, fit the threaded bar into the rawl bolt and fit into the wall, you'll probably need two nuts on the thread to tighten it up, remove these and fit the shelf, take a small wood screw and screw up from underneath the shelf so the point of the screw locates in the thread of the bar locking it in place.

How would that not cause any issue to remove when the glue had bonded round the threads

Edit: I thought you meant glue the threaded bar in. It will still make a mess tho

His shelf is 40mm so it would be 15x3.5

Just put it on the back edge of the shelf, so the shelf bonds to the wall. Avoid the rods. Would be firmly enough in place in-use, but not a particular problem to remove, much like glued skirting.

Slightly delayed response but I finally got around to doing this. I did what cheesy boy suggested and went for the wall anchors and rods. Worked a treat

I used M8 rods and anchors. The rods protrude 20cm from the wall and the shelf itself is 27cm deep and 60cm long. If I was doing it again, I'd probably use M10 bolts as they flex a little bit at the end, but to be honest it feels pretty damn sturdy. If the rods weren't so long I'd be comfortably hanging a silly amount of weight from them.

Couldn't you get a small 2 port extension to go on the shelf until you can get rid of the cable?
