making an image background transparent

Are there any programs that do this or is it easier to use photoshop?

for example i have an image with a white background but want it transparent. Is it easier to just cut the image out, even if its something like a world map.

I belive you can do what you want with this;

Though it depends how good the source image is, I think it will only do one specific colour transparent, so if there is any kinds of blending/anti aliasing, or jpeg artifacts they will cause problems.

Dpending on how many images you want to do this with it's probably better to do it with photoshop or something.

Depending on the image you can normally make a mask from it and then use that to make the white area transparent.

Have a quick google for masks in photoshop and you should find some good tutorials.
