making an onilne shop

This would be an amazing pitch on Dragons' Den.

"Hi, I'm looking for £250,000 to start my online shop."
"Ok, what will you be selling?"
"I don't know, what do you think I should sell?"
Extended, awkward pause, accentuated by editing and camera cuts

And scene.

I'd watch it for the comedy value :D

There's no point making an online shop unless you have the scale to drive traffic to it, which is why places like eBay and etsy work.
This.

Even getting your shop listed anywhere decent (1st 10 results) in the search engines is going to be a task in itself and certainly not an overnight process. You will also have to think about how your are going to manage the payment process, paypal is ok for very few orders but if you intend to make a living from said shop you will be better looking at merchant services and then its a whole new ball game with security...

Cannot compare, apples and oranges, unless you only want oranges.

I know a fellow who makes a £150 mark up on selling one item a day, on average. He tends to sell more during the winter and less in the summer.

It might not be huge profits like ebay etc, be he still gets 1050 before X's are taken out a week.

The items in question are winches for motors.

I wasn't saying he should be like eBay, I'm saying the platform is useful to get traffic that is otherwise very difficult to get, especially without a marketing budget. For most people it makes more sense to sell on eBay than it does to use your own shop.

I know a guy that started selling golf equipment, clubs and so on. I remember thinking at the time there was no point as I thought the online market would be pretty much saturated by now. More fool me, the guy is making a bloody fortune.

I guess he bunkered down, managed to stay out of the rough and just got on with it. Hard work turning into profit is par for the course.

I wouldnt open a shop, would just use ebay.

Sell Small costing electronics on the bay and order in bulk from china and undercut ebay sellers.

I used to do this with Nintendo parts but then was priced of of the market by some major players ;(

A friend of mine has (for the last 2 years) spent all year going to car-boot sales etc and picking up cheap xmas jumpers. Then selling them on eBay for £20-50 each.

Last year I think he netted something in the region of £5k.

However this year, the likes of Primark have cottoned on to it. Selling them for £8-15 each. I doubt his profits will be as good as his previous endeavours.

but ebay take a cut , paypal take a cut.

most people who use ebay stick a nice receipt in your box directing you to their own website

Ever thought about making an online shop for extra cash? what can you sell, everybody has done it nowadays. Ive thought about it but just dont know what to sell. anybody got any ideas? bit stumped on what i could sell.... cheers

Ive had people spend thousands with me to build them online stores, and not sell a single item.

Why? Simply setting up a shop will not get you customers, you need to market it, you need to put time, you need to put effort, and a lot of hard work in.

If your not willing to work your ass off for the first 12 months, then id say not bother.
