Such as classified or dating sites, has anyone tried this, what kind of legal rules are there for taking private information including card details, it all seems a bit slack to me. What kind of hosting requirements would you need for a site like gumtree for example, the costs mainly come down to bandwidth and server costs right, this is for a self built and administered site.

The answer is you won't make any money at all.

Exactly this.

I could come up with and create the most amazing gumtree-like site and you know what would happen? Nothing. Not because my site isn't amazing, but because there is already a very popular Gumtree-like site out there - Gumtree.

It's really got nothing to do with the hosting costs, or even the development costs - it's all about getting it known, getting the visitors there!

Best I've ever done was a gaming site that made me about ten grand over a few years, and a little gifts website that makes £25 a month. I make them as hobbies in the blind hope they'll make me rich

This.

And there are a lot of regulations for details such as the Data Protection Act and ever heard of PCI Compliance? (Exactly why my card payments for my shop sites are hosted externally through a gateway).
