Right, spec in the sig and I suppose this is the right subforum to ask.

How can I make my PC as silent as practically possible - I guess watercooling is the way to go?

Please advise with links/tips or suggestions, I work a lot at it and it annoys me late at night when it's fans are whirling due to bulldozer's stupidly high temps on idle.

I searched for similar threads but couldn't find anything.

Depends on your idea of "practical". 10W DDC, as big a radiator(s) as you can fit in the case, and sensibly chosen fans running slowly is the usual approach. You may find constant speed fans less annoying than ones that change speed, a big reservoir will lower the average speed required. Letting it run hot will also lower the fan speed required. It may be possible to switch the fans off entirely when idle, provided the radiator is mounted horizontally.

Not much you can do about the PSU, water cooling power supplies is more hassle than it's worth. Can't realistically silence the hard drives either. Easiest effective option is to put the PC in another room and get a couple of long dvi and usb cables.

There are cleverer solutions, but that's the basics.

What's the case?

How silent are we talking? Pretty much silent or passive?

The case is Antec 1200. I've also change my GPU with an AMD 6870, must quieter than the 4870x2 !!

I want it as silent as possible. I don't mind the hard drive sound (I don't think I even notice my Sammy's working - but can always add an SSD for OS drive where more of the work takes place).

I just don't want fans (ideally), just peace! Also, whatever solution it has to be of infrequent maintenance, can't be hassled to maintain the system every few weeks. As far as budget is concerned, could go around £200 in the short-term and perhaps add on more in the med/long-term.

U can fit a thick 120.2 rad in the front on the Antec 1200 and still have 2 spare 5 1/4" bays for media drives or whatever and can keep one of the HDD cages for 3 HDD's without too much modding at all, a thick 120.1 will fit in the back where the 2 exhaust fans are internal with again some small modding or u can bolt another thick 120.2 rad on the back on the outside if u prefer, if u click my sig u can see how i set mine out in the same case last year if it helps.

Don't be so naive

Op, can you go to £300? That'll make speccing you a loop much easier :)

How many drive bays can you afford to lose?

These sound interesting.

I suppose I could go to £300 but probably not straight away. Let me know what you think roughly and I will look into it.

For a decent setup that is actually quiet you will definitely need £300 because of the gpu/cpu blocks, nevermind the rest :)

Can I just say that cooling your CPU and not your gfx card wouldn't solve your problem, while I am still on my quest for a gfx card+block only my CPU and ram are cooled, I would say that having it setup this way exaggerates how loud the gfx cards actually are... Pc is silent then I start a game and the noise is stupid loud

Reason I say this is cos cooling your gfx card is gonna cost 80-100

Right, spec in the sig and I suppose this is the right subforum to ask..

Droping 4870x2 for a 6870 - will make the job easier,
Anything to reduce heat and power makes quietening a pc easier.

I'm guessing your a gamer - do you game at night?
Have you tried over ear headphones? (The cheapest way to silence a gaming pc)

Not always. depends on what you use the pc for and when you 'NEED' the quiet.
From your replies it's the fan cooling the cpu that the issue.
Change the cooler to a twin tower type (you might not need a fan)
If you do heavy cpu stuff strap on a TY-140 (running at a constant speed)
Or get a Thermalright Venomous X Silent / silver arrow (for set and forget quiet)

Swapping to a Accelero S1 PLUS + fan and fan controller (silent with 2d apps
quiet when gaming)
Or a Accelero Xtreme PLUS II (for set and forget quiet)

For £90 You may find that's all you need - and if not you can sell one or both without losing to much cash.

Your case and psu are not really inaudible watercooling friendly.
Easy enought to set up a constant low rpm fan cooled loop for cpu & gpu.
(well within budget especially if second hand)

I'd always advised a universal block for a quiet loop so that saves some cost - especially in the longer term.
But a passive tower and active gpu cooling (water or air) is normally always a good start, when quietening a gaming pc.

After you'd got an inaudible cooling solution for your cpu and gpu, you realise how loud all the other stuff is...
So for almost every one a least 1 quality fan is needed - 3 max in a quiet build - these 'hide' the other electrical / mechanical wines and clicks with a soft hum

IT's not the gaming that I'm bothered, I accept loud noise when I'm gaming (not often), it's more when I'm doing office related stuff that it annoys me. I'll have a look at what you suggested shadowscotland. Thank you all for your replies so far.

if this is the case then your only reason to watercool is for the e-peen factor. you can get silent air cooling for these tasks no problem

How? The cpu cooler I've got is supposed to be good (not great) but still makes too much sound as the cpu gets too hot. The case fans are also quite noisy too.

If you are not gaming how are you making the CPU work so hard and so long that it creates enough heat to warrant loud fans etc?

I have a Phenom x4 3.2 running at 25 degrees when I was idly browsing the web, editing photos etc on my Xigmatek Aegir cooler. If your cpu is getting hot while you are doing random day to day tasks on your PC then something is wrong, perhaps you should clean off the thermal paste and re-apply some new?

Get a fan controller and when you are idle turn all the fans down and when you are gaming turn them all up

Get a fan controller and when you are idle turn all the fans down and when you are gaming turn them all up

The FX is getting ridiculously hot (don't know if it's mis-reported in the sensors causing the fan to go crazy) doing mundane office tasks, to the point that it goes around 50c and stays there. I've removed the thermal paste and reapplied it, no major change.

get a new gpu that will quieten things down.

you dont want to be cooling a old card anyway. the block will cost more then the card

I should have added it in the original post - I have bought a 6870. Much quieter than before.
