Making notes on a PC

When at work, I've always scribbled down notes on a notepad when in meetings and so forth. Coming back to them has always been a bit of a pain in the err, hairy part below your back, as my notes are sometimes illegible and often meaningless.

It's also much slower to write than it is to type.

Are there any applications that you can run in the background, do a quick tab, and make notes on a laptop, whilst easily organising them?

A kind of a work/brain assistant for your PC. I've been using Word for just typing notes and it's too restrictive.

The problem with typing notes live is that the tapping sound of your fingers coming into contact with the keys is incredibly distracting and irritating for other people.

As above + I would try improving your note taking skills personally. If you miss information then it's generally accepted to ask to repeat. Sometimes you do have to use your brain.

Thats the most ridiculous comment I have ever heard. Its not like the sound of fingers typing on a keyboard is that bad, in an office its hardly something you can avoid anyway?

I don't necessarily mean in meetings, I've probably started it off on the wrong foot here. It was just an example. I can take notes perfectly fine, I was just trying to set the scene. ;)

We also sit in meetings online where laptops are the norm, and it's not rude to sit there typing away.

I mean if you're sitting about, working, thinking things through, trying to build up some kind of thoughts in the background that you can work out later... I'm after an alternative to paper.

Which appears to be OneNote!

He was referring to in a meeting not in the general office, I think it would be considered rude to be typing in a meeting
why not just take a voice recorder in ?

Onenote is pretty damn good in most note taking applications.

It really excels when you use it with a tablet PC (running Windows 7 ideally). As you can sketch freehand notes and drawings and when you are done it will convert at least the writing into text.

My mistake :)

And yes, a voice recorder is always a good idea, this is what I use in one-to-one training sessions as its hard to keep up with note taking when in a training session. With a recorded you have it there in audio format, the whole lot so you can go over it and make notes in your own pace.

We just bought a notepad and pen for work:) basically as you write it scans what you are writing and then you can upload it into a word document. Not cheap think it was about £300.

Not as irritating as the situation I've encountered in recent conferences/workshops where while you are trying to follow what a speaker is saying you are constantly distracted by people in front of you with laptops flicking through emails/web pages etc all the time.

Probably showing my age but I still find I can take down more info with a pen and paper then transcribe the important bits to a report later.
