I've got two windows machines from work which can't be used for anything really so I'm going to make myself a machine.

Specs are as follows -

Machine 1
i7 3770k
2 x 4gb corsair value ram
Gigabyte GA-H97M-HD3
HyperX 120gb ssd
Seasonic 400w psu

Machine 2
i7 6700 (not k)
HP PM871 256GB SSD
HP Motherboard
1 x 8gb range.
HP 400w psu

I'm guessing to base it around the Gigabyte system but swap in the 6700? Also use the 256gb ssd?

I'll be getting a new case and PSU, ideally I'll pick up a 1070, any recommendations on a small case and psu to fit?

Finally, what about windows? The first one has windows 7 oem, can I legally use the key?

Thanks.

i7-6700 socket FCLGA1151 <--£299 new
i7-3770K socket FCLGA1155
cant swap, different sockets
I say sell machine 1 mobo chip and mem, get a price check from MM (keep ssd and psu)
check speed of machine2's mem and its ddr4 (being hp its prob std low speed but reliable), you may need another mobo for the 6700 and another mem chip, depends upon hp's board format

sale of machine 1 parts should cover new mobo case and possibly extra mem, just leaving a new 1070 if the 6700 igpu isn't up to your requirements

a lot of hp psu's are are quite good and gold rated, but may not have all the std connectors

newer cpus and associated kit are designed for win 10, but win7 should reactivate ok

That's great info thanks, for some reason sockets went right out of my head!

That seems a good plan, did I read somewhere that a certain mobo can OC the none-K variant of the 6700?

I'll see if I can keep the HP board, although it does look pretty none-standard so I'm not sure how it would handle the 1070..

hp board may not have std matx mountings
may not have std connectors (so needs hp psu)
hp psu may not have 1x6 pin 1x8pin connectors needed for a 1070

1070+ 6700 system should only draw about 250w , hence keeping seasonic psu (assuming it has 1x6pin and 1x8pin)
