Making ram respond faster to unloading

When I run a memory intensive program(ex. maya 3D) the ram space used doesn't recover itself very good when i close the program and my system still seems to be slugging. Any tweak for that?

could try logging off and back on, might help if you don't fancy a reboot

more RAM. Your hard drive is taking the strain creating the problem. since i upgraded to 2gb i've not had this problem.
