When I was a young man, my father and I made my bed from scratch. We used pine planks, sanded and varnished attached to a frame we made. We then bought a mattress and placed it on top. I also helped him build his and my Mum's double bed in a similar way. I had that bed for years until I left home and moved in with my then partner. The plans came from a Reader's Digest DIY manual.

That would grind me down making my bed every morning.

Side note is there some sort of advantage to this over a mattress protector or is it a hold over from before mattress protectors where a thing?

Probably a hang over from when mattresses were rock hard or like sleeping on spikes of metal. Blanket softens it up.

I have no idea TBH and my father passed away 5 years ago and my mum isnt a great source of info these days to ask... but yeah, its something I wondered about (hence this interesting thread!)

I originally read that as 'Readers Wives DIY manual'.

I wouldn't dare make the bed, taking away a woman's job like that would make her feel undermined and as if she couldn't do it herself, I'm all for equality.

the duvet cover is the difficult bit - once you have had years of apprenticeship for bottom sheets (thick fitted brushed cotton, then sheet) & pillowcases.

sheets need nursing corners , of course.

Mattress, then protector, then fitted sheet, then quilt which is duck feather for us - nice at warm in winter and cool in the summer.

The other point is how often you put clean everything on the bed, for us its every 7-10 days in winter and 5-7 in summer.
