hi guys

im [finally] moving from amd to intel

i am planning on using the following off my current rig...
  • thermaltake v1 cpu cooler
  • case + fans + other accesories
  • 600W PSU
  • asus soundcard
  • 3 sata hard drives
  • sata dvdrw drive
  • 8800GT

at the moment i will be upgrading the board to the Asus P5Q-E

the processor will initially be an E6300 until i can get a quad
either q6600 or q9300

and the ram which i am the most uncertain about is planned to be OCZ 4GB REAPERX

this will be running on vista HP or ultimate 64bit
and im ditching my dualboot setup

main use of pc is gaming - photoshop - music creation and media etc

has anybody got any thoughts on areas this could be improved
the prices of the current upgrades come to about £400 with an oem copy of vista so i would like to keep within that budget
could i get a better spec for the price?

The motherboard is a good solid choice, can't see any obvious issues with it.

Do you already have the E6300? If not then an E2200 is quite possibly cheaper and will offer similar levels of performance. As to the new CPU, I guess it depends on your budget and how much overclocking you want to do, ask again nearer the time of the upgrade.

That Ram is ok but requires over 2v to boot and would be overkill unless you are trying to overclock quite a bit, certainly it would be for a 1066mhz FSB CPU and arguably could be for a 1333mhz CPU.

What is your current PSU? If it isn't a quality brand then you might want to consider an upgrade while you are at it.

the psu is corsair and is pretty much the newest thing in my rig

i already have the e6300 from the mm so i was thinking of pushing that for a bit until i go quad [which wont be for a good few months]

the ram is what i was concerend with really

should i keep the 2gb of geil in my sig and get another matching set? to take me up to 4gb?

i have also seen this motherboard , would it be a bad move going for a b*grade over the P5Q-E?

what does b*grade even mean?

I'd generally opt for Intel chipsets over Nvidia ones but given the price it seems like it is worth a punt, the 780i chipset isn't too shabby although SLi isn't something I'd normally want to get into but it is an option.

Your existing Ram should be fine but buying an additional 2gb won't hurt you for Photoshop by any means.

I'd avoid the OCZ ram, i've been left with a bitter taste in my mouth from my current OCZ ram situation, basically i've had 2x1GB sticks of OCZ 8500C2 Reaper, always ran them at 2.1v and they've lasted a whole 4 months...

Now to get the machine boot correctly they need 2.3v and lax ram timings.

Going to RMA them, stick the set on e-bay and either go back to corsair who i've never had an issue with or get some G-Skill.

right you are guys

looks like im going for this then

works out at £207.94 inc VAT if i go and pick it up from OcUK

not a bad price for the performance gains i think!!!

thanks all for your help

what does b*grade even mean?

Sorry, just noticed this. B Grade means that the item cannot be sold as new, it might be simply that the box has become damaged in storage or the driver CDs have been lost - the product itself will work fine but you might or might not get any of the extras that would normally come in the package such as drivers or SATA cables etc.

That looks like a nice system though, good luck with the build.

cheers for the help guys - i appreciate it

i think im going to go with the board in the basket image

just because i want to know what i am getting is covered in warranty and that all the bits i need will be there
