Making Videos on Youtube - Questions

I don't know if anyone on here makes youtube videos or knows someone who does or can give some advise in general but I've decided I want to make videos of me playing games (I know original right :D) but I'm not sure really where to start. (Apart from create a youtube account)

I see people on youtube who have made a living and a fortune from doing this (pewdiepie, KSI etc) and I've started thinking why not give it a go.

So my questions are as follows:

What's the best way to record my PS4 Footage? I was thinking of using the elgato game capture hd or does anyone have any other recommendations

I see a lot of people of youtube have headsets when they play / record themselves what's the benefit of this?

Should I commentate live whilst I play the game or is it better to play the game then edit it to commentate over it after? what's the pros / cons of either or best way to do it?

What's the best software to edit videos? (any good freeware for a windows 8 laptop)

I want to be able to do what other youtubers do which is play the game but in the top right have another video of my reactions etc. How do I film this part of it? and what equipment do I need and how do I put it over the top of my video? (I presume using the editing software to overlay it?)

Thanks in advance:)

check out arumba he does really good videos and should be the style your aiming for.
don't expect to get rich because you won't the market is to saturated by wannabes with little interest in gaming

stick to niche games unless you can get on the bandwagon early which is unlikely since succesful streamers get early access to almost every game helping them keep the monopoly

less time consuming live but most the "professionals" have scripts and add the voice on after.

I prefer live as if your talking to a mate, they are likely using headsets so they don't get feedback/echo in the mic

I'm guessing they record their reactions with a webcam and add that into the corner after with an editor..
It's not really needed in every video though, nice to see what someone looks like but we don't need to constantly have your face blocking out part of the video.
I'd only do it if your going to be fake and act like a ****

A seemingly sensible answer for GD! And within 5 posts too.

What Ark said, unless you have some niche or are a comedy genius/get very lucky I woudn't set your sights on earning millions.

A lot of youtubers are doing paid for video content now. You pay to watch videos that they haven't put on youtube, but them put on youtube anyway :D

Sorry to say this but you won't be making and sort of decent money off of YouTube anytime soon, maybe in a few years if you play your cards right (by "selling out", advertisement deals, etc.), or you do something completely new and original that you manage to viral or reddit or whatever. But you're planning on playing games, nothing new unfortunately.

Pewdiepie/KSI/etc. are a very select few number of you-tubers who manage to make a decent living off the video streaming service. Most scape along the bottom of the barrel for the longest time and have to put in a lot of time to see anything become of it.

Nothing is stopping you doing it however, it is a fun past-time/hobby if you're into that sort of thing (recording/commentating/editing/etc.). I'm sure plenty of people on these forums (and, well, everywhere else) do it; just uploading random clips of something cool they managed to capture while playing a game.

You can commentate if you want, but only do it if you are confident in your own ability to do so. So many people feel the need to do so, but they lack any sort of engaging listening voice that their videos just feel dull, with lot's of "uh...'s" to fill in the blank space.

And try to be unique, please. Trying to have a thriving gaming channel amongst the saturated sea of generic content isn't easy. You need to stand out. So many aspiring you-tubers try too hard to follow in the steps of their main inspiration that it just looks like a carbon-copy with no originality. e.g. don't start you video out with "yo what is up guys, it's your boy..." or something so familiar as that, editing style, etc.

yea skyrim was good for that :D
If you get some bizarre ai behaviour or a nice bug your videos went viral pretty fast.

don't play whatever the next Bethesda game is without constantly recording!

An important question to ask yourself is, what will you do that's different to other Youtubers and will make people want to watch you?

you need to be unique. don't copy other people.find your own angle.know how to find your target audience.market your videos.

best to just start making some videos and read and work at it. you wont just become good as with anything takes time.

what many wont tell you is many youtubers get there videos paid to be promoted. so someone behind them is paying to get them promoted /views.

so a certain big youtuber may do content for granftheftpotato for eg. crockstar :p will probably put money behind a big youtuber to get his video noticed.

if you want to know what you earn you get per million views £600.that's if you on your own not with a network who will take a percentage.

so its hard work almost impossible to make a living from it. best to see it as a hobby and if it progresses to a lvl you may earn from it work from then.

I Will check out his videos, i'm going to do a lot of research over the next 3 months of peoples channels making notes etc so i'm 100% ready and not just rocking up to youtube like a complete newbie.

I guess i'd do a combination of live and edited after to cut out the bits which i'm not happy with.

I'd probably put a small webcam on top right just I think it makes the audience be able to engage better (put a face to a name type thing) but not every video.

I appreciate the responses so far guys, some good advice so far and keep it coming.

I know a lot of people are saying "there's a lot of youtubers you won't make it" but I think to myself .. so should I just not try because of that? I think if I adopt that attitude then I have zero chance. There's a lot of footballers out there or a lot of people working in IT or a lot of builders etc. I also am realistic that this could take anywhere between 1-3 years to become anything or even to get to 10k-100k subscribers.

I will try respond to most posts in here and also in 3-4 months time when I make my first video I will post it in here to get ripped to pieces by you guys - I know what GD can be like:D

I realise i'm not going to be a instant hit and also aware that a huge percentage will fail and give up and that may be myself but I think it's worth a shot, i'm doing this as more of a hobby and a past time and if I make it then woo go me but won't be quitting my job anytime soon, i'm going to do it for 1 year and assess the situation come the end of the year.

I think when KSI made it there was a lot of competition and their is still people making it in youtube new people will come along but if we all give up before trying then defiantly won't make it, it's like saying there's a lot of people who know IT networking skills so I won't make money from it so it has given me a ambition I guess to try like I look up to them people.

Yeah I'm going to start out as a hobby and pastime and see where it leads, I'd say I am quite confident and funny so hopefully that can translate over youtube but I think that's the hard part for most people as I've never done anything knowing a camera and audience will be watching.

Appreciate the feedback will take note:D

What games are you going to do?

Why not try Twitch streaming to start with before you pop out your first YT video.

Also make sure you have a decent logo/channel art/cover.

I got ripped to pieces by my GF over the fact I watch YT videos of people about gaming, then I told her how many subs the top people have and how much they make and she said "Why don't you do it?" Lol, typical woman.

Good luck.

Don't go into it for the money. You need millions of views to make decent sums from it. Most of the big channels have taken years to get where they are, it certainly doesn't happen overnight.

Thanks for the advice, I noticed you have some youtube links in your sig I will take a look when not at work.

Any tips on making videos (my original questions in OP)

I will be doing it with my best friend so looks like £300, by the way if someone makes 1 video and never makes another video and it becomes a internet hit and he reaches 1 million views..youtube pay him £600? is that how it works?

Yeah i'm only starting it out as a hobby / past time.

Just PS4 games to start, so any games I play, fifa, mortal kombat, project cars, gta etc etc but me and my best mate are going to do it so playing co-op mode online with each other as I think we have good chemistry and bounce of each other or something along them lines and some of the indie games on ps4 to begin the chanel with.

I don't know much about twitch I've heard of it but never spent time to find out what it's about, can people make money of it? Can you stream ps4 games and can you do it live?

I was speaking to my friend about youtube and people who have made millions and have a lot of subs and we both agreed... why not , if we don't try we won't be them people haha but that sounds like woman logic to me, I know it's not going to be easy to go out and get millions of subs overnight.

Don't monetise your videos straight away, you may get around 100 views average for the first few, when you have a decent sub base then start to monetise.

Yeah good advise, I am starting this out as a hobby and pastime but who would not love to make a living from making videos / playing games like pewdiepie for example. That's my goal and ambition in the long run and I think you need to have a goal and ambition in life otherwise just end up plodding along.

Yes you can make money of Twitch via donations etc.

Yes you stream direct to Twitch from the console itself, you just need a Twitch account then you link them and off you go, you click 'share' then Twitch and you're streaming.

I've done it a few times, I'm not sure if your viewers see your whole screen as when you play you have the Twitch interface on the right. The Elgato HD60 can be used to stream direct to Twitch too. You can also link your YT account and have it auto archive your Twitch streams to YT.
