Can anyone recommend any for me to use. I have tried a few but they all are very basic and generic. I would like something nice and simple (read; not basic) and modern. Preferably a free software download.

I have tried Frontpage album option but doesnt work with NTL webspace. Or I cant get it to work either way, its not good. Dreamweaver is too complicated for me.

I do love Silverpenguins website, thats the sort I would prefer.
Any advice is welcome.

Yes just looked at Silverpenguin's webby and indeed its very, very nice.

How do people host these sites? My ISPs pathetic 250Mb/month allowance is hardly going to cut the mustard as soon as I start putting photos up, but the dedicated servers from providers like 123-reg.co.uk seem quite expensive at £39.99/month, although this does give unlimited bandwidth.

No I havent. I have just d/l it and giving it a go now. Looks ok so far.:)

I take it I dump my pictures in the 'images' folder and same with the thumbs.. ?

Yup. although have a look at the site, theres the the scripts that sort the gallery file and thumbnails out automatically. So all you would have to do is place the pictures in the Images folder, then run the script. Have a look at my site to see what simple viewer looks like. Ive changed it a little bit, but its dead easy to modify. Im now working on getting it embedded in a html page so I can have contact pages etc.

Photoshop has a function for making web galleries under the automation tab in file.

Just had a quick go, and it took about 30 seconds to set up the most basic, I am sure a bit of time and it would be capable of a decent gallery.

I have a couple of domains with these and can recommend them!

Problem with simpleviewer is that each time someone loads the gallery the WHOOOLE gallery is downloaded. Fine if you have a couple of visitors a day but as the number of galleries grows and userbase grows then your bandwidth goes up loads too! Even if they want to view one pic the whole gallery downloads each time :(

Does anyone know a good gallery that links into something like photobox for selling photos? The photobox own brand one looks naff!

Yeah I hate the photo box version too :(

I'd be interested in the above if you can find a good one though!

Thanks mate, always appreciate opinions on my site :)

I forget who I registered mine with but they got brought out by Pipex so its now through them.
I looked around at LOADS of galleries/web packages online and couldn't find anything that worked as simple as I wanted it too, they were either too fussy or just too expensive. Eventually I stumbled on a flash plugin that was really customisable yet simple in terms of how it worked and how it looked. I then designed the site around that, as I knew that would be the best way of making sure everything fitted together nicely - for example the text on the none gallery pages all fits inside the same shape as the thumbnail selection area so its all clean.

Of course its worth pointing out I did NONE of the actauly building, I got a friend to do it who knows his stuff. I just told him how I wanted it all to work/look and he made it happen.

For web hosting, I would highly recommend vidahost. The customer support, especially, is second to none.

If you have a basic knowledge of html or are just willing to learn as you go along then don't count out sites that don't rely heavily on flash. I often think, and a lot of people will agree here, that sites with flashy flash (scuse the pun) displays that take ages to load are just annoying. My site is a massively altered version of what photoshop can give you automatically. I liked the design but the html was lousy, so I re-wrote it.

EDIT .. to expand on what I said. IMO a lot of people use simpleviewer (etc), which in some way reduces the impact or what you're seeing, as it isn't different at all. Look at a load of people's websites on a load of different forums and you'll see what I mean. If you want to have a flash site that really displays your work at it's best, then imo, silverpenguin's (look up) site is as good as they come. It looks good, it loads fast and it's simple to navigate but above all it's different.
