I'm currently in the process of creating a site for a friend, and he's adament that he wants to be the first result on google when people search for "architectural antiques". Now I've never made a site before that needed to be popular, so how should I go about it?

I understand that I need to do some stuff with meta tags and what not? Can someone explain please

These are largely useless these days, due to overuse and abuse. Search-engine optimisation is not a precise art, it's largely down to trial-and-error and hard work. There's no 'quick fix' and no magic beans to get you to the top, no matter what anyone says (because they're usually trying to sell you their SEO services).

Fortunately, spinneR~uk's written several good search engine optimisation guides (older thread in the archive) that contain much of what you need to get started.

I'm currently in the process of creating a site for a friend,

Have you got a domain name sorted out yet? if so create a very simple holding page with the "architectural antiques" in the title and also a small bit of blurb on the page with "architectural antiques" in it. then get it submitted to the search engines. Hopefully the site will be up by the time the search engine gets round to indexing the site, and if it's not you have your key phrase in the page title as well as in the content to be indexed.

If you haven't got the domain name get it sorted asap and do the above

yeh the domain names sorted. I'll do the things mentioned cheers. I'll also learn how to type "your" properly ;)

The only way to do this is to actually be the best website for architectural antiques, and getting lots of high profile sites linking to yours.

just realised that if i put my name into google.com or .co.uk my website comes up second, and if you put the design name I use for myself, it comes out first out of 843,000 :D

is that really a suprise considering your domain name is your real name? it would be more impressive if it were something else. :p

Quite, what you need to be coming high in is your keywords, how many people will do a search for starry eyed designs (even less chance with that spelling) or in fact your name - unless they actually know about you already!

My site www.atcscases.co.uk comes up third for the search term atcs Cases and atcs case which is what people would be putting into google if they were looking for ATCS cases

My bebo profile comes up first if you type in my name.
My old website comes up 7th and my new one (with a domain name) comes 8th

Typing my design name brings up my old website in second place and my new one in third

Flickr is first

to the OP

The keywords you mention are "generic keywords" and are ones that people who don't know your company or website would use to find you.

This is a bit of a different ball game to being found on your unique company name.

It certainly is possible to rank on Google page 1, or even no' 1 .. but in needs a) some money b) some time c) some hard work.

How do you submit your site to a search engine? Is it just something that happens automatically or something you do? I now there are websites claiming to do it for you for a *price* but I assume they are just making money off people who dont know what they are doing.

Ah ok thanks. Just another quick question, my index age is just a welcome page i.e. "Enter my site", I know thats ont the best idea in the world but will that affect anything?

it's a terrible idea as far as SEO is concerened. you should have lots of key words and phrases on the page that you want the search engine to pick up. not to mention the fact that 'entry pages' are usually entirely pointless anyway.

Thats what I thought. :( It just makes my site easier to edit. :o

I'll remove it and sort the site out a different way. :)

how so? if editing is a problem you should consider using a cms.

Its just the file name of the proper homepage changes quite regularily, so instead of having to move it and rename it index each time I change the homepage, I found it easier to to just stick a static *welcome* index page and a change the link to the page depending on what one it is.

I use dreamweaver so it automatically updates the links each time I cahange and move files but it seemed easier at the time to just have the static homepage. I changed it now, its not too much hassle. :p
