Hi guys,

I have a cousin who needs help choosing compatible makita tools

He needs the following cordless tools, and wants them from:

- Makita
- 18V
- Cordless

The list of tools is:

- Combi Drill
- Impact Driver
- SDS Plus Drill
- Angle Grinder
- Jigsaw

And they all need to be compatible with the same batteries

I told him that the cheapest way will probably be to buy a Cordless Combi Drill with 2/3 batteries and charger and then buy the rest as bare tools?

I hope you can help guys

Pretty much all of the makita 18v li-ion range use the same battery.

There have been some changes to the battery over the years, with yellow tabs and a star etc etc. So have a google on that.

but if buying new I'm pretty sure new batteries work on all the new gear.

The makita range is large, so he should easily find those tools bare, you normally see deals on a Combi drill and two batteries like you say, I find the 3.0ah fine, but they do go higher than that.

Wouldn't bother with the angle grinder and possibly the jigsaw. Unless you have many batteries and ability to change them non stop. I bought the angle grinder and it's useless on anything over wire brushing. Not man enough and battery doesn't last long. Bought a corded one after and it's chalk and cheese.

I think the same applies to all of the range. Anything that needs proper grunt needs to be 240/110 really.

I can't comment on the Makita Jigsaw, but the Dewalt one has been fantastic. Had it for what must be 10 years now and still going strong. Seems to handle anything my mates corded Bosch can handle. Gets used daily for all sorts of tasks, even sharpening my pencil.

It's great just being able to grab it out of my tool bag to make a quick cut, whereas with a corded saw you wouldn't bother as you'd have to cart a 110v transformer and an extension lead about. I think it's heading the way of cordless tools taking over with brushless and 5ah LI-ion batteries.

Buying a kit with batteries first is a good idea as the bare tools can be had cheap on ebay. Just make sure they are a UK model so you can register them online for the 3 year warranty.

All the joiners at my place use Makita 18v jigsaws, don't seem to have a n issue with them.

Be careful, as a few people have pointed out, not all the Makita 18v Li-ion stuff shares the same battery.

I think ive got that bit convered

but what is confusing me now is that apparently "LXT" is their best stuff - but what are their other series of tools...

Are all of these different series?

Makita Cordless Drill DHP481RTJ
Makita SDS Plus DHR242Z
Makita Angle Grinder DGA452Z
Makita Jigsaw BJV180Z
Makita Impact Driver DTD146

I know it goes Es against the OP, but I've been DeWalt for the last 12 years, that was until I got a Milwaukee cordless driver, great bit of kit, light and very sturdy. Will be replacing the rest of my power tools with these once they kick the bucket.

Used for cuting threaded bar, galv trunking, slots in dist boards, even the odd padlock when needs must!
