Very expensive compared to everything else, you mainly get carlsberg and tiger, from what i remember it's around £3.50 a pint.

EDIT: Oakesy2001uk which hotel are you staying in?

The Palace of the golden horses

I was only expecting a bed and a shower. :D

At least I have a gym there so I don't have to stop training, and broadband in my room. Actually getting quite excited now!

I *think* it's because its primarily a muslim country and so alcohol is very heavily taxed, even worse if you want to buy a foreign car, 150% import tax

Wonderful place. IMO the people were nicer than any other country I've ever visited. Link in stunning scenery and dirt cheap costs, you're onto a winner.
For example, I remember staying in the Hilton in Penang for one night, wasn't sure of costs, ended up at £28. The room was bigger than my old apartment in London.

The other thing is to brush up on your pool playing ability. I played quite a lot whilst out there, great way to kill some time in the evenings.

As it happens, I'll be back there in Nov, this time with the g/f who's from the north of the country. Can't wait.

not going then

I will quash or verify this frightfull rumour, duty free would get a bashing if I actually had to pay for anything!

thanks for all the comments guys, I have gone from a little scared to really excited about going now! The stunning hotel helps :-) Still wish I could take someone with me, but I will be ok on my own!

I stayed there for three nights - great view overlooking the town and, if my memory severs me correctly, the most ostentatious McDonalds EVER right opposite the hotel entrance.

PS: Watch out for kamikaze locals on scooters.

There's loads of Malaysians at my uni who seem pool-mad, is it a big thing over there or something?

I remember being "offered" the services of a couple of absolutely stunning women whilst in KL. Can't go into details as this is a family grade forum.

As for the pool, they did seem to play a lot. Got completely blown off the table by a couple of barmaids in nice coastal town I visited.

Walk into any western hotel and go and sit in the bar and whip out a laptop and they surround you like flies ...according to my dad :D

Wonder if I can achieve the same with my DSLR?
One way to find out...

Its a bit like hotel babylon, i got chatting with one of the bar men and they say the girls come in pretty much every night and ask them the names of the blokes in the bar to get themselves a head start so to speak. Oh and Oaksey check out the hard rock cafe, have a look around at the staff and have a game of guess the gender. :D

Maybe I missed it, but what do you do for a living? If you don't mind me asking, that is. :)

No I dont mind you asking, I work for Atos Origin, only a very unexciting 2nd line support job, I'm just well liked by the higher management.
Just going over there to shadow them whilst a contract is being outsourced over there, make sure everything is going smoothly whilst it changes over.

I have no Idea why they are bothering with 5 star hotels and nice flights, I'd have been happy with a clean bed and a shower. (and the obligatory company credit card of course, can't be expected to pay for my own beer!)

Not going to complain, they even stuck me in a 5 star hotel whilst I stay over at heathrow for a night before my flight,12 hours 25 minutes non stop. Anyone ever stayed at the radisson at heathrow?

Is that before or after the ones with bulges in their pants mug your laptop and wallet?

Im sure I will make some friends whilst I'm over there I have a habit of doing that!

I worked there on an elective study as a student. KL is a great place to stay, people often overlook it as a stay over from the airport before they go elsewhere in malaysia, but its great area.

Go out for nightlife in Bangsar, but be aware it is very expensive to drink compared to everything else in malaysia.

enjoy the food, you can try so many wonderful dishes and at a price you dont mind paying if you find its not to your taste. I had a policy of try everything from hawker stands if I hadn't had it before

and you WILL be propositioned many times especially around all the tourist areas and the golden triangle area particularly was very bad for that. It can be hard to know who is trying for business and who is just wanting a chat, because malaysians are such a friendly bunch that they all seem to want to chat with you when you're on a night out.
