Maldives...

It looks amazing, but is there much to do, I assume scuba is big. But is it just mainly lying on a beach and eating out.

Scuba, snorkelling, sailing, lying around sun bathing reading and eating is pretty much it.

You can't get a tan in 3 days, especially when you spend half of it 30m under water looking at the fishes. :D

Sounds like about 3 full days/4nights, like a few have said. With those flights you would have to stop somewhere else on the way out.

Obviously people spend a week or two there and there are direct flights in from Heathrow.

Obviously people do, just saying for me and other people we would be bored and due to 10hr flight it wouldn't be worth going all that way for a short stay, so you would have to make it a multi stop Holliday.

Ah I see what you mean, yeah there are quite a few multi centre trips available like Thailand/Maldives, Sri Lanka/Maldives etc. But yes if not doing very much is not for you then the Maldives isn't a place you would really want to go to.

We stayed on chaaya lagoon hakuraa huraa in a water bungalow, it was quite a big island and primarily caters for Chinese guests, who are insane! We much preferred the first island we went to which was Makunudu, it was much smaller and friendly, just beach bungalows - it felt more special, whereas Chaaya was more mass market.

I stayed on Makunudu back in 1999. What an idyllic island. 36 Bungalows, one restaurant. and the sunset beach was beautiful.

Diving on the house reef from the lagoon, and out through the boat channel was awesome.

What a coincidence, me and the wife stayed there in January too, when were you there? We flew out Dec 30th for two weeks.

The water bungalows were good but the rest of the island wasn't as nice as our last stay in the Maldives, which was at Olhuvelhi.

Had the same experience with the Chinese, tripods everywhere, daft poses and what on earth was the deal with matching outfits! :o

Edit: Just remembered I sold you a tower unit that you collected from me, would have been even stranger bumping in to you over 5000 miles away!

We stayed at Olhuvelhi year before last. Stunning place watching the manta ray's off the Diving jetty.

We paid just over £3k for a week
We looked into going back during their high season and it was over £8k for 2 weeks

Anglesey this year then

Yeah it was perfect, took the shine off our honeymoon because it was so much nicer than Chaaya Lagoon.

There is no childishness, as I said already if your opinion was that you don't like it because it is expensive and that you prefer more cultural places then that's fair enough. No one could argue with that as that's your preference.

Not understanding why such a place would be expensive and to say its over priced is ridiculous. To say it once again, why suggest somewhere with culture when someone is saying they were interested in the Maldives. When someone says they want to go to the USA or Australia, do you suggest they go somewhere with more culture?

Actually next time someone asks about a holiday in Australia I might suggest a holiday in Australia is over priced and they should go to somewhere with more culture. ;)

Actually I spent 3 months working in The Maldives for Wataniya, and it IS overpriced as a tourist destination. I can tell you from speaking to many locals there and spending time on a few different islands

I stayed in Malé and other islands where locals live much of the time - again nowhere to grow food - and restaurants, etc, were literally a fraction of the price. I think you underestimate how established the logistics are in the vicinity.

Also the sea plane transfers are crazy expensive. Did you know locals pay about £20 for the same journey a tourist will pay $100's for because the hotels force you to? Granted the price is subsidised to some extent by the government, but certainly hundreds of dollars per person for a transfer is a joke and a crazily inflated price package put together by the hotels.

Also boat journeys that cost just a few (20-50) Rufiyaa to locals are charged at literally hunderds of times more to tourists when operated by the hotel resorts on identical boats.

So yes it is overpriced, and I do know what I am talking about.

My parent and I are also looking to go to the Maldives, this was the best I could find @ £1015 pp

As we've decided to go to Egypt, for flights do you think £260 pp is about the cheapest we would find for sharm el sheikh ? Also were abouts is the best place in Egypt for snorkelling ?

One thing to check, if you want to go snorkelling daily (a must) make sure your island has a house reef.... Not all do, and some require a 20 min boat ride to get to one.

Some friends of ours just got back from there and had a great honeymoon, it does look very nice.

Just booked our Honeymoon for September, 10 days at Veligandu in a Jacuzzi Water Villa, can't wait! Not sure about all the sharks and stuff though, are you allowed harpoon guns? :p

Well that entirely depends on your travel dates?

Use Sky scanner website, I doubt you'll get much cheaper than that unless you buy some sort of package deal..

Worst possible month you could have picked, not only in terms of cost but the heat..

Hope you like it hot :D
