This issue may have raised itself before apologies but yesterday my Internet suddenly decided to stop working and my pc rebooted automatically and when it did it rstored it to almost factory settings apart from any docs in My documents and the C drive, but all my emails are gone 5 years worth!
my ISP has been wiped! I had tons of saved Outlook Notes over the years they've gone, some Photo's and all my music anyway my question is are they still there somewhere? coz I'm running Zone alarm Virus checker its been going for over 4 hrs looking at I see some familar files it's checking that I can't see I was advised earlier to do system restore but it didn't change anything, am I right in saying it's that malicious worm that's going around and is there a way to get everything back?

I am desperate

Grateful for any advice

Regards

Tophe

probably just reset your profile etc

look in C:\Documents and Settings\

There's likely to be your old user profile in there with all the files

don't use ZoneAlarm, it's causes more problems than it's worth.

Nod32 is a good one to use, or Kaspersky

Thanks bled, yeah had a look the files are intact on the C drive and I have back up on those my main problem is 5 years of email, sorry I run a business and have quite a few years of important stuff plus load of notes on MS outlook which have disappeared as well + my isp has disappeared as well.
I'm using a free tiscali connection that came with my PC and I never used this bvery weird

Ah good news it's all in tact, now go out and buy an external HDD or DVDs or anything, but take backups. I suggest an external HDD and take regular backups, not just of your files (weekly, monthly etc.) but of your email and profiles as well especially if you are running a business!

Point taken re back ups I know I know don't worry lesson learned painfully, ok but you said its intact so how do I retrieve ir? is it data recovery software like was mentioned or another way?

Thanks

is it outlook express or office outlook you're using?

all your stuff is still there, just in the old (broken) profile, sometimes they just corrupt, you won't need to run any file recovery software

basically the emails are still there too

i'm not on XP at the moment, they'll be in file

C:\documents and settings\username\application data\microsoft\outlookexpress

or something like that, someone else will give you the exact location, or use google to find it

basically you need to copy the file (probably quite big if there's 5 years worth of emails in there) and assign it to a new outlook account

any decent 'backup and restore outlook' (or outlook express) guide will give you the locations.

No good found instructions how to do it the file it says to import back into OE is not existant and its not under my original username it has my name plus 000tagged on the end and this was created yesterday when everything went to pot and why is my isp been deleted as well?- very frustrated trying to fix it and learn as well but getting nowwhere.
