We are thinking about going to Malta for a week in September or maybe December over Christmas.

It looks nice in pictures and reviews but know nothing about Malta really, other than my grand parents used to go about 30 years ago :D Has anyone been recently?

Ideally looking for a reasonable B&B hotel with walking distance to restaurantes, bars and shops. Close by beach would be nice too

Covid wise Malta seems to not be an issue (at the moment) We don't want to have to spend a week or 2 in quarantine!

Budge wise, I would say ~£500-£700 pp for hotel, flights and weeks spending money

Take a look at the Spain situation and guage from that if you may or may not enjoy two weeks quarantine at the drop of a hat if the circumstances change. Wouldn't really be worth going anywhere before the end of this year or middle of next year in my opinion.

We did think this but surely places would not be open for tourism if there was a high chance of going into lockdown again? Some European gigs are even re-opening towards December and early next year

Well, err Spain was open to tourism wasn't it? Just shows how quickly things can change. This is the new normal, people need to get used to it.

We've been to Malta twice. First time we stayed in Sliema, probably 6-7+ years ago. Nice area but is a bit of a construction site now. Tons of new hotels/apartments going up, possibly starting to look like your average Spanish resort. Nice selection of things to do, easy to get around on the buses to places like Valetta, Mdina and other sites, also ferries to Gozo and the blue lagoon etc. Nice food etc. If you want something more lively St Julian's is the place.

We went last minute in May last year and stayed in Valetta. We fancied some sunshine and it was essentially a glorified long weekend of eating and drinking. It was nice (Valetta old town is beautiful, but small) but I came away thinking it was very touristy and generic. In fact our taxi driver back to the airport put a massive downer on it it because he was a British pensioner who moved out there, your typical London cabbie type who was just telling us how easy it was because everyone spoke English and they drove on the same side of the road  lol Anyways, in May it was nice weather. I'd imagine Sep would be similar. When we first went it was in July and that was 35c :p

We've booked for Gozo in Nadur in October. An island just north of Malta.
It looks close enough to Comino and a short ferry to Malta for a couple of days

There is a cancellation policy so can cancel before the end of September at no cost. If Covid hits then we cancel. It's cost £365 for 7 nights B&B in a double room and £100 pp for flights from Manchester.

I love Malta personally. My grandad grew up on the island and was stationed there in the RAF during the war so it has a special connection with me. Gozo is also lovely but 20 years behind Malta, and it feels so totally different as a result. I'd recommend both islands whole heartedly. The only thing I would say at the minute is what has been mentioned above. With things so fluid and dynamic the situation is changing almost daily. I wouldn't be comfortable booking any holiday just yet unless it was somewhere in the UK. Why risk it, especially if you can't get travel insurance.

Package holidays will refund you, that's the safest bet really.

Usually I wouldn't book a package holiday myself, but there's certainly less risk at the moment in doing so.

Travel insurance says this, which means i should be fine.

"COVID 19 cover is available as long as your trip was booked when there was no government advice in place against travel to your destination." which there was not

There is also free cancellation on the b&b booking
