MAME display issues

I have just installed mame on an old laptop and I am having an issue with the display, I get vertical black lines across the entire display when in game, any ideas why this would happen?

you can emulate scanlines too, so your best to disable them in options as thats what i think is going on here.

Another suggestion could be that the laptop drivers are not quite up to scratch. You could also try reinstalling the game as the installation might have gone wrong. But before you try either of those, try tinkering around in the display options within the game. I take it you haven't got the laptop graphics card overlocked by the way?

I fiddled with scanlines and thats not it, also messed around with all the gfx options, it may just be the laptop itself, its old. It will work on games in windowed mode without the lines though, its only fullscreen thats the issue. I cannot get any controls to work either which is confusing the only key that works is TAB for options in game and then 5 for credits and 1 or 2 to start a game, no directional controls are working for some reason.

Try running it in windowed mode. If you're using the Extra MAME gui then it's in the options tab.

As stated in my previous post it works fine in windowed mode, just not fullscreen.
