Hey guys,

Just to praise Apple a bit here :D

Yesterday I went for the launch of the new iPhone 8 / AW Series 3..

I was there early, surprisingly quiet (I think everyone is waiting for the launch of iPhone X) and while were waiting, Starbucks were around taking orders from people..free of charge and order whatever we fancy..and guess who's expense this was..Apple..

Now I know they are making a lot of money from people like me.. but how good do Apple look after their customers...

They aren't trying to "be nice" starbucks have a budget for marketing, they want you to go back to them.

If you think it's as simple as "Apple paid for Starbucks for all of the people waiting out of the goodness of their hearts" then you're deluded, just where Apple (and most companies) like their customers best.

I ran a busy Dominos store for 10 years, every time we saw an opportunity for free exposure, we'd take it.. I'd reguarly give out 50 free pizza's just so people know we exist and what we are about.

In short:

Apple are awesome for giving me a £2.50 latte that they paid 75p for in order to make me feel better about buying a £700 mobile phone that cost them £150 to make.

... and to keep their stores open, their employees paid, the shipping and freight, the research and design, the costs of operating a business, manufacturing, advertising, support, software development, oh and profit for their shareholders just like any other business operating in the free market today.

Apple aren't my favourite company, nor am I a fanboy but I don't believe it's fair to chastise them based on the cost of parts alone for a product.

LOL at the replies. There is no such thing as a free lunch or a free coffee for that matter. Will no-one think of the poor slave driven Chinese children who have to make the things?

Come on, you are over analysing. The point remains the same whether the gross margin is £300 or £600. Apple are not being nice for the sake of being nice, they are maximising profits, nothing more, nothing less.

Exactly, because if just 2-3 of those free pizza recipients places an order in the future, your costs are covered.

You might even have been given a promotional budget just for this very reason.

No randal wasn't. The first iPhone 8 cost billions, the second one £150. The cost of an item is more than the bill of materials to the manufacturer. Naturally there's a profit margin built in as they're a public company with shareholders keep happy, not a charity.

Considering how big apple are in the tech world, innovation seems fairly low down it seems, marketing seem higher up on the list, so this purported R&D investment isnt as large as they would like us to believe, ie they are making crazy large margins. I'd level same accusation at Samsung aswell, but at least they have made an effort for the last 2 generations.

Funny you should bring up Samsung. Features are no good if not developed and tested properly. The Face detection of the new Note 8 still unlocks the handset with a photograph. Bet the iPhone doesn't.

Apples marketing is genius, they get people to repeatedly buy the same very high priced phone with minimal actual changes.

Just looked on Apple website to confirm the pricing, its amazing how they do it.

ime Samsung's approach to feature development is just throw everything and see what sticks. I am a long time Android user, but have no time for what Samsung have done to it. I have an iPad but wouldn't like an iPhone as my primary phone.

Back on topic, I have high opinions of Apple customer support / care - typing this on the 2017 MBP 15 (£3k worth) that they gave me because of short supply / delay on fixing (for free) the battery on my 2012 MBP :)
