Man of Kent? Kentish Man?

I'll have a chat to the missus, she's spent some time here in gravesend, she didn't mind it much. I would like to get away though, but yeah the thing is once you've lived in kent all your life, same ****, different surroundings...

out of interest (as I still live at home) whats the avg cost for council tax\gas\leccy for a standard flat (for a geek, 2 PCs, TV, V+ etc) I guess this is a "how long is a peice of string" question, but..

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Whitstable yet. I go there everyday and it's a brilliant place. Seaside, good air, haven't had any trouble from undesirables :p Not sure what the trains are like to London/Canterbury, but it had a semi-decent bus service to Canterbury.

I live in Whitstable its a really nice place. Not that big but not that small either. Gets rammed in the summer months with tourists mind. Lots of pubs although more old mans pubs then younger nightclub/pubs. A handful of younger pubs to make your local. Train to London from Whitstable is 1h30ish think the trainline/service is being upgraded in the coming years to speed up the time.

Too many charity shops and hairdressers in Whitstable, every other shop is nearly one of those two.

Easy access to Canterbury. Buses to Canterbury from Whitstable costs £5something return. Normally good service, never had a problem on them myself.

my gf lives in strood and I live in wimbledon :p river me a cry.

going to cantebury saturday though, anyone know of any nice places there for a picnic of some sort?

Train fare is around £21ish return peak, cheaper to get annual ticket tho id guess. I only use the train offpeak and I've got under 25 card so I only pay £15.20 for a travelcard.

I'm in Canterbury, it's not too bad, but as people have said, there are good parts and bad parts. Very lively pub life, and there's at least 20 or 30 in the city centre, so take your pick. There are clubs and bars too, Chill and Studio being the main ones. Cinema, handful of primary and secondary schools, library, lots of shops.

All in all, its your average city with a mix of everything. Nightlife isn't too bad, but you don't want to be out alone any later than 10pm, it can get a bit rough. Herne Bay and Whitstable are about 20-30 minutes away by bus, and there are services all over the place.

Oh, and be prepared to see tons of students and tourists. It is very multicultural too, but there's a lovely atmosphere and some beautiful places, notably by the river and the Cathedral. Any more question about the city centre (with the exception of housing, I'm too young to worry about that - all I know is that there are a lot of new home developments and such), just ask. Been here for 17 years.

Canterbury will be an expensive place to rent because of its uni status. Try Folkestone, only a short drive away and reachable by train. It is also a lot cheaper than Canterbury for rentals, and it has a beach :p

My brother lives in Canterbury and he always mentions how expensive it is in comparison to surrounding areas because of the Uni/City status.
