Man trapped between train and platform

Why are there pictures of it? I find that a bit disturbing cause if he doesn't pull threw then his family won't want those pictures to be around.

If he survives and wants them to be posted around then that would be fine as it would help to tell a tale, a tale we don't need visual aids for at the moment.

ho do you know? maybe they would want them posted to highlight the dangers to other passengers ?

:( Poor bloke.... I'm surprised he didn't pass out and remained concious considering how much pain he must have been in ?

I'd imagine it's completely squashed everything waist down... ack, nasty ;(

he should have minded the gap to be fair.

looks like the 'extender' was delayed for whatever reason and he stepped off the train before the gap had been closed (potentially because he was blocking his sight with that big box that is also stuck in the gap)

I am hoping a re-think of this design will happen after this accident, truly terrible design. Bloody Americans always go one step further.. surely a mind the gap audio announcement and a station guard works.

Hope he pulls through.. I can imagine his injuries are very severe.

People are also being slaughtered by gates in this country too.

Very true.. not sure why those photographs have been published.

The more I look at those photos the more I think he is in real trouble of surviving. Can see where a passenger has attempted to jam the platform by placing a bag infront of it.. I am not a good judge of measurement by seeing but I would guess that that bag as been compressed by around 10cm. He looks like quite a large person also..

Yeah very true have read and heard about these also.. it is terrible and the companies behind the design have a lot to answer for, those deaths and injuries caused by gates could so easily be avoided. It should be illegal to place an electronic gate without safety features.. Ha I call them features (!) but Christ they should come as standard!

Being crushed by a gate is terrible and I don't mean to belittle it at all. I think a higher chance of people getting injured by this stupid moving platform due to the sheer number of people that stand on a platform while waiting for a train.

Dion fell into the gap at 10 p.m. Friday night after the 4 train pulled into the station, and he was trapped before workers were able to disengage the hydraulics and free him, witnesses said.

"All those little ridges were in his stomach," said witness Josh Betters, 22.

"He was screaming, and you could hear him over the people crowded around him. Somebody was holding his hand," Betters said.

Another witness, Mike Day, 30, of The Bronx, said he was standing in the train by the doors when Dion fell down.

He said several people on the platform tried to help Dion, pushing the movable platform with their feet.

"One guy even tried to put a box in between to wedge it open. But he couldn't move it," said Day, who snapped these dramatic pictures as police tried to free Dion.

"He kept saying it was hurting -- he was conscious," he said. "Every time they tried to pull him, he was like, 'Stop, stop. It hurts too much.' "

The train's operator, Janice Carter, said that as soon as she brought the train to a stop, people started banging on her window and shouting that a man had been stuck.

"I secured my train and came out to investigate," she said. "It was complete madness. People everywhere. I saw the man between the gap filler and the train. He was yelling."

One transit worker at the scene said it took about 20 minutes before a contractor arrived and was able to climb into a platform manhole to work on the extender's hydraulics. After about 10 more minutes, he removed a tube from the device, releasing air pressure so the victim could be freed by cops, sources said.

Firefighters arrived several minutes after that and removed the man, the MTA worker said.

According to IMDb.com, Dion has appeared in several small independent films.

In recent years, the MTA has made modifications at stations where there are larger-than-normal gaps between the platform and the train, particularly on the Long Island Rail Road. The Union Square station is one of only a handful of city subway stations that have the movable extenders.

The MTA would only say it was continuing to investigate the incident.

He has been in several independend films according to the imdb... strange because when I first looked at the pic I thought "oh he has one of those faces that I'm sure I've seen before"... probably not though...

Them videos highlight exactly what I said on page 1. Why the hell do they need them for? That gap looks no worse than some stations on the London Underground.

I hope really hope this guy pulls through and sues the **** out of the rail owner.

There could be a huge issue with the fact that they released the man after 30 minutes and then several minutes later the firecrew arrived. He should only have been released after the firecrew arrived. The body builds up toxins during crushing, and anything later than 10 minutes can be fatal due to this. Firecrews and Ambulances carry the correct medication to help neutralise the toxins.

It was unintentional. :(

Those extenders are crazy dangerous, and I'm surprised there's no form of sensor built in that ensures the way is clear before it activates. It's pretty damn negligent really as it's obviously a potential crush hazard. It also amazes me that there (apparently) wasn't an emergency release that could be activated a bit quicker than 30 minutes..

They're obviously there to stop someone falling down there. Oh, wait...
