Manchester United - decline?

Much better side on paper. Not a better team. Their individuals are much better but as a whole they haven't been as good as they should.

That will likely come with time, if managed correctly.

It was the same with Arsenal and Chelsea, they both built great teams and won it a couple of times until we caught up and went on to win it twice as many times after them. Exactly the same was said then, that we were crumbling and that we would never get near again, just to be proved wrong a season or two later.

you have still got to dislike man utd tho

ive not really liked them since watching george best dennis laws etc went of them really quickly
{ will add i loved those guys }

and in recent times have grown to not like them one jot.

not saying they are a bad team ofc they are not. they are an epic team of the last ten years.

i was so happy that man city did it to them today tho even if it was a bum clencher

i was talking to a lot of mates today al supporters of other clubs and not man city fans

but they all wanted city to win and utd to lose..

whatever the reasons are for that im happy for the results

Judging by your posts I find it hard to believe you're old enough to have seen Best and Law tbh :/

This isn't a thread about whether you like them or not. Your 'thoughts' aren't particularly easy to decipher either.

I'm pretty sure he's the guy from Liverpool who started threatening everyone in GD a month or so ago as well, but I'm not certain...

lets not get ahead of ourselfs here , utd lost on goal difference only and highest amount of points than most other seasons and this is with a team using little spending money compared to city's wealth of oil money

this thread = lulz, if you had won it would have been YESSSS CHAMPIONS but you didnt so its DECLINEEEEEEE

love it

Who's saying that exactly? Is it the United supporters or people like yourself who prefer talking about Man Utd rather than your own club?

99% of neutral supporters want United to lose whoever we are playing, it's nothing new, the reason for it is we are successful and have been the dominant force for the majority of the last twenty years.

Who do you support?

I for one have enjoyed watching united this season, because I didn't rate their chances much, but look 2nd on points difference is a hell of a season!

agree thats the reason totally. like previously it was liverpool for a few years.

ive supported chelsea since 1969 ish and FCK (danish team ) more recently

...but surely the fact that we need those improvements suggests we are indeed in decline?

Looking at the current United squad in comparison to the last 5 years or so I don't think anyone can argue that we aren't in decline. It's not a major disaster or anything but we do need action and it's action we've needed for 2/3 years now.

You can argue that we've run City close but then you can also argue that City can still majorly improve. They've won the title despite having their first season in Europe to contend with, big ego players to manage, players that aren't quite a team yet and a team that isn't used to winning.

I dont dispute any of that, on the other hand

1) Utd were always going to have a tough season trying to replace VDS (who probably was worthy of a handful of points on hs own)

2) Vidic's long injury

3) No youth to speak of coming through for the last few seasons until Cleverley who had a disrupted season (and none for at least another season). You can mention the likes of Smalling and Jones, but they were already playing senior football for EPL sides before joiining

3)Tevez and Balotelli would have caused most other clubs a lot of disruption but with Aguero and Dzeko for a cool £70m it wasnt much of a concern however much the press wanted to make of it (different to say Rooney combusting and not being available for x amount of matches lets say)

Impossible to say who has a more disrupted season, and who has done better "despite" those disruptions - at the end of the day City still spent £150-£200m inside 18 months, which is way beyond any one else's spending ever (even allowing for inflation etc etc).

City were also helped by those other clubs like Chelsea and Liverpool who also spent small fortunes in the same period not performing so well in the league (ie the 6-1 may not have been so significant if other sides had performed as well as they had in recent years)

Isnt there something about " it is always harder to retain a title, than it is to win it the first time"......

Hmm United's Demise, let's discuss. A season in which we fought back to go 8 points ahead only to choke it and loose out on goal difference to arguably a much stronger City team player for player (Yes Gilly for once I actually agree with you). Can't wait for tomorrow in work when all the scouse fan's will claim the morale victory because they won a cup automatically means they had a much better season than us despite finishing a good THIRTY SEVEN or SO POINTS BEHIND US

As said in other thread's United haven't been able to push on to take the top prizes in recent years for a very simple reason, the midfield is not strong enough. Nowhere near strong enough. Playing Park who hadn't played for three months against a match fit and more athletic Toure in the derby at The Etihad was suicide. So tactics from a single game aside. Three steps is what caused the goal, two from Smalling forward and one from Kompany backwards creating three yards of space for the winner, that's how tight the margins are. Then the 6-1 mauling at home. With more experienced players would we have lost 6-1 ??? See where I am going with this. The line between success and failure is minute.

Who needs to go ?

Park, Berbatov, Owen, Carrick, Giggs (Yes Giggs, despite his wealth of experience, it counted for nothing in the run in) All of them have been great servants in their own right for or club.

Park - too slow, never been a big fan of 'Industrious' wingers who are 2nd rate central midfielders

Berbatov - He would have made the difference in the run in right ??? I actually think we would have finished a good six points off City if he played more games. Too slow and does not impose his game on other teams like he should

Owen - Too Old, Too Slow, let him go and lets have a proper number 7

Carrick - Mr Steady, Dependable call him what you want but you will never call him Mr adventurous. Rarely gets in behind the back four and Scholes doesn't and never will have the legs to do it now either. Teams have found us out and they know that if we are to get in behind them it will be from Valencia.

Giggs - What to say, a true legend of the game, Giggsy sign off at the top son.

But it's not all that bad. De Gea is a great goalkeeper in the making, Jones and Smalling 'Should' learn from the Etihad experience, if not they are at the wrong club. We have a very very strong youth team which we must rely on. The facts are we can't go toe to toe with City in the transfer market. The thing is we could never go toe to toe with Chelsea either if they wanted to exercise their muscle in the market. Yet despite their investment from Abramovich they have won the title 3 times to our 4 in recent history.

You're old enough to know that there are no prizes for 2nd place Loki :p

Had any other side blown an 8 point lead with just a few weeks to go, we'd be talking about them choking and their manager cracking up ;)

...and you could argue the goal difference was only because we got beaten 6-1. That is 10+ for City against us right there!

I disagree. I would have prefered Utd to win as City are the new club buying their way into success. With a league title and their money City are going to go from strength to strength.

Utds core players are all aging, and the replacements coming through aren't as high as their old standards. So unless they buy big and whatever City dont want they I would say they are in decline.

I still think they will be there or there abouts but they will still end up below the new champions of Manchester.

I am an Arsenal supporter by the way. And considering the start of the season I would take 3rd as our version of winning the title lol

This page sums up you lot, not a single mention of £18m signing Valencia

The rest is history, pipe down, City are in town, Man U cant claim Scholes/Giggs are the future!.
