Manchester Vs Birmingham

Isn't there a joke about that?

Manc, brummie and scouser are sitting in the pub discussing which is England's second city. Brummie states his case that Englands second city is obviously Birmingham. Manc does similar for Manchester but neither of them can agree so they turn and ask the scouser what he thinks is the second city and he responds "England's 'second city', that's London isn't it?".

:D

I'd much rather live in Liverpool than any of the others, Bristol would be a close second though!

Birmingham has changed massively in the last 10 years. It’s a genuinely great place to live and work with a friendly cosmopolitan population. It’s a big city so has problem areas, but which city doesn’t? Birmingham has a great food scene and loads of amazing pubs.

Not had enough experience of Manchester to properly comment.

The only thing that really matters is how many John Lewis’s a city has:
Birmingham 2 vs 1 Manchester.

Manchester has 2?

I’d say Manchester was better generally except the weather which is the worst city by far.

Honours even then... although as with Solihull residents being referred to as brummies, I’m not sure people in Cheadle would appreciate being called Mancs!

The food scene in Birmingham is superior though. Michelin stars are a sure fire way to get Mancunians riled up!

Birmingham has a disproportionately high ratio of disgusting areas. I don't like it. That said it is fun in terms of variety of things to do and it's a great night out.

There's also not a single attractive way to enter the city.

Are you asking about the city centre or the city as a whole?

I'd argue that Manchester is better in terms of both though. What exactly are you looking for? A skyline alone isn't really going to offer you much quality of life. What you like about food and people is also very subjective.

Man Utd & City
Oasis, joy Division, 808 State, Chemical Brothers, The Smith's, etc etc

Or...

Aston Villa and UB40

Manchester by a mile. I spend time with work in both. Birmingham is a depressing she'd of a city.

Surely Glasgow is far better than both? :p.

And Edinburgh better than all three, no? I mean, sure Birmingham and Manchester might be the "second cities" in England, but if you want to look to Britain's second city, look to Scotland. Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Bristol, and Liverpool feel like big cities, sure, and each has their charms but Edinburgh is a city to tussle with the best continental Europe has to offer.

I live in Manchester but spend quite a bit of time in Birmingham. I find Birmingham city centre pretty unpleasant, especially at night, but there are some nice bits. Manchester has it beaten on every count though.
